I have an older set # 29176.
It used to work well, but I got it out today after couple of years of non use, and the train only runs backwards.
Everything is connected properly, yet the transformer doesn't change direction when the knob is turned to the left beyond 0 mark. It also doesn't change speeds as I move the lever. The lever only activates the loc when it is turned to the right nearly all the way up. If it is in the middle of scale, the train doesn't even move.
Please help!

Maybe a case of HOS that needs some TLC.
HOS = hardened oil syndrome
TLC = tender loving care => remove the old hardened oil, clean and lubricate her

The motor has one field coil for forward operation and another coil for reverse. Each coil has a separate decoder output.
Maybe there is a decoder/motor problem that prevents operation in one direction, maybe it is just the HOS.

Note that HOS can kill decoders.

Not sure I understand.
Is this procedure to be done on Locomotive or the transformer?

The loco suffers from hardened oil, not the transformer.
Remove carbon dust from the collector, hardened oil from the gears.

Nothing changes inside the transformer when you reverse the direction. You cannot blame the transformer when the loco only works in one direction.

Do you hear humming sounds from the standing loco when you apply power?
There could be a transformer problem when the loco is still standing at 50% of the speed scale. You can use a light bulb or another loco to test this.

Are there any instructions or guides how to open the loco to get inside to do the cleaning you describe?
