Good Morning,

Thought that I would go with the times!

Since Marklin is the best model train manufacturer in the World why not advertise it on my layout!

I bought myself a beautiful Black beauty of A NS 1200! The Marklin 37128! (Should be here in a week or two!)

Picture might be copyrighted as this was downloaded from the internet.

I would love to know who else has this beautiful locomotive and better yet any pictures of the real thing!

Michel

I like the 'whalebone' masts for the overhead. Are these peculiar to the NS?

Where do you run it? Confused

You have a wonderful 3 rail layout, not a 2 rail one.

I don't.

Good question but having a wonderful 3 rail layout make you also want a 2 rail one! So hopefully one day............

You have enough space to do so - that is run BOTH on separate tracks.

The challenge may be how to integrate them so they will come together as one railway - the "MRC" (the Michel Railway of Canada). ThumpUp

The Whalebone masts are peculiar for the NS as far as i know, they are made of moulded concrete and only found on certain stretches.
Some go back to the year 1942,in the midst of WW2.

http://www.archiefedward...and/ns/uitgelicht_08.htm

The arches are called Gothic type in the comments to the pictures.

Ah, OK, thanks. I didn't realise they were that old.

I guess it was a case of steel being a material required for war use, whereas concrete was available, and by use of some ingenuity could be cast moulded to a shape that was strong enough for the purpose.

Thanks for the link.

Yes,the comments in Dutch supporting the pictures in fact say this.
Due to the war,the use of steelprofile was stopped in favour of concrete portals.
The concrete portals were in fact much stronger than the steel portals.
After the national railwaystrike in September 1944 German troops removed the overhead lines on given stretches to cater for shortages in Germany,it was found that steel portals snapped like matchsticks (because of the remaing cables pulling them down) whereas the concrete portals could withstand the tension.
The strike continued till liberation early May 1945,causing huge shortages in food in the west of the country, notably in Rotterdam,The Hague, and Amsterdam.
On the positive side it meant that NS locodrivers (including the grandfather I never knew) were no longer under fire by allied planes.

The Gothic type is not the only concrete version,at least two other concrete versions were in use.

So,even poles have something to say about history!

On 5th August 1944 the USAAF destroyed seven trains,45 people killed,212 people wounded:

Very interesting as like most I do no know much about the history of the NS and your post was nice to read.

What happened during the war has been told to me many times by both my parents who survived the war living in Nijnegen, especially the food shortages.

Is there a Dutch manufacturer who makes these concrete wishbone masts in HO scale?

Yes I know, I believe there is an unmarked mass grave near the Centre of the city. My parents remember it well!!

A rather obscure maker called Hogos Finest have been making the Gothic arches in scale N 1/160.
Have sofar not found them in scale H0 1/87.

Information on another type of concrete pole used for overhead wires:

Found a Gothic arc in scale H0.
Looking at it I think putting overhead wires to that could be rather cumbersome.
Story goes that these arches built in 1942 are nowadays protected property which means you are not allowed to tear them down.

I have the good old Marklin 3161 (NS 1202) in blue with "A" headlight configuration and the Marklin 3168 (NS 1213) having the headlamps including taillights.
I prefer these classics over the newer generation, the handgrips on the noses being much too big.
I think they are great and I really love their spoked wheels!
If you have ever witnessed these locomotives pulling an intercity and passing a station with 120 km/h you cannot help but being impressed by their American appearance.

Put up the sound!

Florian Sieber of Marklin together with the real beast:

You have these also?

Note the old versions do not have the oversized handgrips on the hoods.

One interesting feature is the station announcement in Dutch. This may be the only time that an announcement is in a language other than German or English. There is no English announcement, however, or German for that matter.

The discount is just about 50% - why? Such a high discount seems odd.

Reminds me of Walthers' discounts on Marklin, also very high. But Walthers' regular prices are usually very high on Marklin locos.
