In the United States rail statistics (such as tons/train or ton-miles/train) are kept by the government and by the Association on American Railroads.

Does anyone know what organizations public or private keep comparable statistics in Europe?

Specific questions for Europe:

1. What % of rail freight traffic is bulk commodities (cement, chemicals & fuel, coal, grain, automobiles, etc.)? 91% in US

2. What % of rail freight traffic is intermodal/container? 9% in US

These kinds of statistics (either mass/train or mass x distance/train) -- plus the much greater need and use of rail for passengers -- help explain the great difference between US and European rail operating practices (for example more frequent, shorter freight trains in Europe).

The Paris-based UIC (French: Union Internationale des Chemins de fer) or International Union of Railways is keeping statistics. Free high level data for, inter alia, European countries (Provision of detailed statistics is subject to a charge):
