They have two traders from France attending, one is star boutique from Auxerre.i must say Marklin was very thin on the ground last year!
Although Ian's does hold a good stock, his price vary a bit depending on the day.

I saw a total of two Marklin locos for sale, on different stands, one when I looked inside the box had a sticker saying it was Hamo, so evidently had had some form of two rail conversion, as the box definitely was not a Hamo one.

Another second hand stand had a group of six pale blue box goods wagons of various types for sale. I inquired and they wanted to sell the six as a single lot for £90 which I considered a little high, and I didn't have that much money available, even though they claimed they were in mint condition.

I also took a number of photos. About half the layouts were continental modelling, but all the photos I took were of UK prototype models ...

First some nostalgia, a proper Hornby Dublo layout that will bring back a few memories for a number of us ...

Now a layout that will be right up the street of Alsterstreek ...

It could have been inspired by the plan Alsterstreek posted over here ... BigGrin BigGrin

Round and round we go (anyone need to use a lot of curved track up?).
Double track mnain line with schattenbahnhof for each direction.

Hi Alan
The pictures look great!, did they have any European layouts? I was a bit worried when several pulled out at the last moment, also it does not look very busy!

The one thing I would say about the traders, star boutique from Auxerre, last year brought me over a Noch layout and delivered it to me at my home FOC. I must have saved about £300 on the GB asking price. ( I know what some people think but it's all that space allows and unfortunately I do like to see the trains run)

Hope you had a good time!

Harry

Thanks for the photos Alan! ThumpUp

The circular layout reminds me of a similar track plan featured in a 1974 Railway modeller as "Plan of the month". I remember spending hours poring over that plan and telling myself I would build it one day.

Today I would do something different as the circular plan is wasteful of space in a home environment, but it is perfect, I believe, for an exhibition layout.

How was Southampton? These are my old stomping grounds as I was a student at Sothampton Uni for three years (1977-1980), and more recently my son was also a student there (2005-2009). Funnily enough I have always managed to miss the Solent Model Railway Show but I would like to put that right one day.

By the way a lot of my Marklin was bought in Southampton from a shop whose owner was called Trevor Salt. I forget the name of the shop, but it might have been something like "The old toy shop". The shop was located just off St Mary's Road near the city centre, but afterwards he moved to Portswood road in Swaythling and shortly after that he closed down. When I passed that way a couple of years ago there was no longer any sign of the shop, and in fact the building was in the process of being demolished.

I chose not to go this year as I was a little disappointed last year, noted as Harry mentioned a number of exhibitors pulling out and found the location, parking and facilities a little off key. Years ago it was most definitely on my list of mustn't miss annual shows with a good selection of continental layouts. It was held at the Guildhall in central Southampton so I would persuade the wife and kids it was a day out near the big shops etc. I vaguely remember the M dealer in Southampton, along with another in Portsmouth and a the toy shop chain Beatties which was an excellent source as they didn't sell much M so you could usually find items from last years or the year before that's catalogue at very good discount! You will now have me thinking of the names of the dealers as it will nag on my mind.

Around half the layouts were continental based. I didn't feel that any of them were spectacular, and some of them were in the theatre area that wasn't particularly brightly lit.

I think it was Auxerre that were there, with lots of ESU, Brawa, LS Modelles, and a heap of other stock. I don't know how well they will have done, as there prices did seem a bit steep, but I am not up on the general pricing of the various brands, and didn't look closely at what they had beyond a couple of Brawa Red/Cream thunderbox coaches at Euro 50 each (which sounds like RRP to me), and an ESU Am4/4 for which I didn't note the price.

I was a bit worried about the show, when I was at it last year, I was disappointed by the lack of both continental dealers and possible layouts. Unfortunately the show is lacking a bit from a few years ago.
I remember when overseas modellers would attend and create a massive layout in the hall, that's when it was in Eastleigh.

But I think that down to the way overseas suppliers really don't appear to fully support british modellers.

That's a bit heavy for a Monday evening.

Ray,
You are always welcome in Southampton, but unfortunately the council appear to have decided to flatten most of the town centre, if you like coffee shops and burger bars you will love Southampton.

We don't really have a main dealer for Marklin in the UK, only gaugemaster, but it's very small beer to them.

yeah, last time I went to it was at eastleigh, and it used to be a quite decent show back then.

I suspect this is just part of the general malaise in MRR in the UK, the way this show has declined.

I am afraid you are right Alan, it the problem the world over, younger people today appear to need consuls and remotes to enjoy themselves and not Model Railways.
When I go to shows nowadays the attendance can be split mainly in two, those under 15 and those over 60!

This us not helped by the lack of any drive from companies like Roco and Fleichmann who got rid of the GB rep, John Hills and Marklin who concentrate on the European market.

What a moan that was!

I've probably said it before, but I believe that the hobby will eventually decline into a minority activity with just a few specialist manufacturers surviving. All we can do is to try to encourage the younger members of our families to take up the torch and to give model railways the right kind of public exposure. Too often Model train enthusiasts are seen by the public as quirky little geeks hiding in basements waving little flags and blowing whistles and wearing funny peaked caps...

I went to the show on the Saturday and was not that impressed. Manage to purchase 1 Marklin Waggon but thought the set as already mentioned were too expensive at £90. Went there hoping to see more Marklin. Thats 2 years running now and not been that good
