Moving quickly on from my "everything stops for tea issue" I have been evolving my layout a little today

We now have Transformer 6001, 6021 2 keyboards, 6043 memory which run simply 5 k83 decoders for turnouts all looped with a red/brown bus that goes nowhere near the track. From the transformer we have the yellow and brown wire set looping round a modest lighting circuit. WE have an MS2 linked to an M84 and four hobby signals and linked to the track.

So we switch it all on and am really happy everything works except my good old level crossing which has a yellow wire and used to take its brown from the track.

My brain says I must not use the brown from the MS2 as a common brown but how do I get the crossing to work?

Make a common brown - or add "Out of order" signs to the level crossing.

Electricity works best with closed circuits. The electrons that use the yellow wire to get to the level crossing also need a way back.

If its the level crossing that automatically comes down when the train gets there and then goes up when the train is passed, that is sensed and moved locally in the crossing itself - it needs no interface to the Mobile Station or anything other than track power and ground (so it can activate when the locomotive physically gets there and when the last car goes past). [at least thats how I think it works]

The latest versions for C track need no external wires as they can operate with track power (at least on digital layouts).

The "yellow wire" indicates that external power is used (which makes this thing also suitable for analogue operation) - and then a brown wire is also needed to close the circuit.

The term "good old level crossing" lets me assume it is a level crossing from the analogue days.

Doooh, thanks for that.

In the meantime I will leave it with one barrier up and one barrier down on the assumption we are half expecting a train.
