I don't (yet) have a layout, and I haven't really started planning for real yet, but I am gathering ideas for features I would like.

One is a "transverse" station, somewhat like Copenhagen Central: the station building is transverse to and over the top of the platforms.
This would allow the front of the station area to be a plaza, with a small city section. The platforms extend from the station building the other way, and are covered with steel and glass roofs. The exit tracks are under the city section and only need to be functional, and lead to a reverse loop, helix or shadow station (I haven't decided which yet...)
Our own hxmiesa has a good diagram here Terminus station => Actually a through-station

Any suggestions for the station building? Preferably one that looks a little like Copenhagen Central. Failing this, would the Faller Bonn station or Neustadt look OK if I modified the platform side to be a terrace or something?

Also, for the platform covers, I was thinking of Faller 120180 or 120199.
Any other suggestions? These are both quite complicated models.

It's quite ambitious, but I'd like it as a "centrepiece" model.
Cheers,
Damon

Hello Damon,

I think the Faller Bonn (one of your noted options) could be used for your purpose.

The actual prototype Bonn station is a "through station", but on my layout I have used it as an "end station".

I took the following images at Copenhagen Central Station last July .

As you say the station (entrance facade here) is transverse to and above the level of the tracks :

Below the station the platform tracks run under the station :

Thus you could use this side of the Bonn station to be the entrance facade :

and modify this side of the station to be the opposite side above the tracks :

In German, that kind of station is called "Reiterbahnhof".

Here is the German Wikipedia entry with some images and - when scrolling down - links to examples throughout Europe:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiterbahnhof

Verviers-Central in Belgium is a nice prototype for replicating in 1/87, not too large and not too small:

I know that you after a German station model, but here is what I did with a Walthers kit on my US-themed layout.

The "Reiterbahnhof" to the right and the road overpass to the left are concealing reverse loops.

Further to PJMärklin´s reasoning: A project by a German modeler working with K track.

The layout is in located in the north of Germany, people are used to rain there.

As an alternative, a large overall roof could be used to set the stage, concealing the exit and entry of trains.

Why are all lady Prieserlings fit and gorgeous

And all the gentlemen old and crotchety?

Even in the rain.

Not all ladies are gorgeous ...
See here or here or here. I know they are all smaller than HO, but the same sets are available in HO, i just wasn't going to go that far down the search results ...

It's a tough life being an outdoor working girl there, not behind shop windows like here, but I'm sure they can take it.

Damon´s initial question related to the Copenhagen central station. A web search showed that the station design is inspiring the Danish MRR community. Here is one of the results of a Danish Maerklin user.

Our own hxmiesa is a member on this Danish forum. Maybe he could provide further information, since I only have a faint idea what is being written in the posts.

Then I found a 2-rail layout of Copenhagen central station. However, I cannot clearly detect the actual station building.

This is the sort of thing that I want!

Also PJ's picture, but with the part to the left of the station covered, with city buildings on it:

Thanks for all the suggestions.

This is very inspiring. Having a tranverse station makes it possible to have a hidden part of the switchyard with standard turnouts, and a visible part with slim turnouts. I like the Venaria prototype from Italy, a pretty small station close to the Alps.

Venaria station

Maybe I could use the Vollmer Burghausen station? Cool

Rather large, though...
I might need to re-think the size. Unsure

Station throats in above track plans - albeit catching the spirit of the prototype in the first example - are big space consumers and can easily be condensed in an elegant way - see C track-based alternative here:
