I thought this might be a little bit of fun, this is a Marklin users group BUT some, if not most, of us have that dirty secret of what other brands we have "mixed in". I was a purist until someone enticed me to purchase a Piko car that was, and is, pretty nice, so now I've allowed other brands to invade. My total count right now, excluding Marklin, is 9 different brands that I can run effectively on my AC layout and intermixed....lets see whether 9 is a low ball, a high ball, or about average for an AC layout...

In reflection, I am going to scale back to 7..... counting Primex isn't exactly a jump into another brand per se and my own color coordination scheme allowed for a little duplication apparently!

To that end, I have Piko, Roco, Fleischmann, Brawa, Trix (they're converted!), Lilliput and Baur

I am not what I would consider a Maerklin collector, but a collector of Swiss trains. It just happened that my first European train set was made by Maerklin. My collection includes:
Hag, Roco, Fleischmann, Lima, Rivarossi, Liliput, ADE, Heris, RailTop, LS Models, ACME, Jouef, Sachsenmodelle, Tillig, KombiModell, Kleinbahn, Klein, Piko and many others, including Kleinserien manufacturers like Wabu, Friho, Hui, Eyro, Alpnacher, Lemaco, etc.

If a model is crap or runs like crap, I probably won't buy it, even if it is a train that I would like to have in model. If a model is made for 3 rail AC or can be operated on 3 rail AC, then I will consider it for my collection.

I love Swiss trains because you can find such a vast selection of domestic and international cars and coaches behind Swiss (and today international) locomotives.

My humble collection includes rolling stock from Märklin, Roco, Piko, Trix, Fleischmann, HAG, Brawa, Liliput, Mehano, PCM, Lima, Kato, ESU, Gützold, Hobbytrade, Rivarossi, Electrotren, Sachsenmodelle, Tillig, LS Models.
I have a Bemo item that came in a Märklin box, so I should add that brand, too.

Some people are disappointed by other brands - this can happen if you use Märklin close couplers and/or "DC" wheel sets.
Using other brands may require some research, but IMHO it is well worth it.

Actually, it's "Grammar" - not that anyone's checking!! LOL LOL

Let's see... these items can run on my 3-rail track;

Faller (various H0 wagons)
Lima ("Le Capitole" Coaches)
Roco (1 Loco, 1 Car transporter)
Eheim (H0 VW Draisine - 3-rail)
Electrotren (possibly)

And items that can run 'across' the Marklin tracks or on a separate line but still in the same layout...

Hornby-Dublo (1 x 00 Loco)
Faller AMS Cars
Faller Car System
Hamo (Trams)
Bachman (Brill Tram)
Bachman (Gandy Dancer / Jigger / Handcart)
Tyco Broadway (Trolley Car / Tram)
AHM (Eheim) Trolley Bus

Interesting to list them all like this.

Apart from Marklin and Primex I have some of these:

Trix, Brawa, Roco, Piko, Joeff, Lima, Rivarossi, Hag, Oskar, Italeri and Dapol (last two are wagon kits).

I have always been reluctant to stray from Märklin on my layout without a really good reason, but I found Tom's recent comments most enlightening in that some of what we buy as "Märklin" may perhaps have in fact been made by other brands for Märklin.

Locos : Hag, Roco and Piko .

Rolling stock : one Faller container wagon that came with the Faller container terminal set; one two-wagon bins set that pick up from the ash pit crane.

All the rest of my locos, emu's, dmu's and rolling stock are Märklin with a very little Primex

Regards,

PJ

My Roco, Piko, and Fleischmann 3-rail digital locos can also run on 3-rail analogue layouts. Some even have sound on analogue layouts (optionally).
If your locos are digital ex works then they should also support analogue operation.
It's OK if you do not run them because they are not Märklin. But you can still run them even if they are not analogue.

I have one Roco container wagon and one Electrotren tank wagon.

Everything else is Marklin.

I have decided to stay in Epochs I & II, with that in mind I have used Marklin for locomotives and passenger cars. Freight cars have been Marklin but I like a lot of the Brawa rolling stock (freight). No one can beat Marklin when it comes to the locos, especially if you are using a CS2! I am tempted by a several Brawa locomotives but have not strayed from the congregation as of yet!

Good thread. Well I've always been loyal to Märklin and one brand of Rye but I do have some others;

4x Lima - Wagons-Lits coaches

1x Liliput - Crane wagon

3x Electrotren - freight cars.

Hi Markus,
Wow!!! What a collectible item that is.
I guess it is HO.

I recently acquired a CIWL restaurant coach in HO done by BLZ.
It is a bit furry, but I am gradually tidying it up with some judicious touches.

In HO, besides my Marklin items (93 locos, 103 passenger cars, 481 freight cars) I have:

Roco - 3 locos, 2 Railjets and a BR10 steamer. also have two sets of passenger car sets for the Railjets

MTH - I count B units that can run by themselves as a single loco, therefore I have 65 locos. I also have 12 MTH passenger cars and 56 freight cars.

Exactrail - I have a set of 24 CSX coal hopper cars

Athearn Genesis - I have a set of 12 GATX oil cars

G Gauge

I have a large collection of LGB bought during the 90s all analog

O Gauge

I don't have any O Gauge presently but I am real close to pulling the trigger and buying some MTH locos that I intend to run in DCC mode via my CS2. The first purchase may be in the next couple of days.

N Gauge

I have a few Atlas and Kato locos and a bunch of Micro Train freight cars. I have never sat down and counted them.

Mostly Märklin, of course.

Brawl make a lot of Era 2 rolling stock, so I have quite a bit of that and a few of their engines. It's such fiddly stuff that I rarely run it.

I love HAG and have around ten engines and half a hundred or more pieces of rolling stock. I'd likely have more, but it's getting very hard to find. Very solid quality.

Does Trix count? No engines, but a bunch of rolling stock converted with A/C wheel sets.

I have one Fleischmann Lok.

Nothing at all from Roco. Many years ago I had a couple of their Loks, but was very dissatisfied with running abilities, so I sold them. Not a fan at all of Roco rolling stock.

All my 1 Gauge locos and wagons are Märklin. Most (97-98%) of my H0 locos and wagons are Märklin.

I have these items from other manufacturers:

Roco SBB C 5/6 AC digital. Another a little different SBB C 5/6 AC digital 43872 coming soon.
Roco DB V 200 035 AC analog 43928 coming soon. I have around 20-30 Roco freight wagons.

Liliput SBB A 3/5-700 AC digital. Liliput SBB Ae 4/7 AC analog. Liliput Rheingold wagon set.

Rivarossi DB 18 528 AC analog coming soon.

Röwa a few passenger wagons.

Schicht a few passenger wagons.

Trix one passenger wagon set.

In my opinion many of these other manufacturers items are really nice and run great, but some of them are so detailed that they get too easily damaged...

Cheers,
Janne

Here is my list of train makes that I have. You may notice a few instances of 0, 1 and G gauge mixed in. I used to collect Hornby Dublo exclusively starting in 1947 until the 1980s. Incidentally my first Marklin was acquired in the 1950s, it was a TT800 and was the only instance of deviation until I started buying others including Marklin the early 1980s.

I have started to catalogue my Marklin collection and found the following amongst them:

Rocco Steam loco
Rocco 44016 & 44017 circus sets.
Walthers 2 x SP wooden caboose.
HAG Nr. 151 Triebwagen
Kleinbahn passenger carriages and goods wagons
Rivarossi cab forward
Rivarossi American passenger set
A number of Wren locomotives and several goods wagons.
Hornby train sets, locomotives and a number of carriages
A Challenger Imports NP Railroad EMD 7 set.
Lionel O gauge Thomas and Hogworth Sets.

From Riverossi to the Challenger are not used and form a collection. The Lionel is for my grand children. BigGrin

After Marklin I now only buy Brawa. I have in the past had Fleischmann and Roco and HAG. Gave up HAG as they are not available now in the UK and the price is ridiculous for what you get. I agree with Mike on Swiss outline and of course Faller etc do lots of Swiss kits. Brawa detail is very good and the locos run well but for me Marklin comes first. Never keen on those manufacturers who don't make track or controllers as they live off the others who provide us with essentials. Just my view.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Markus I notice you have LS Loc CH. I had three of these live steam models many years ago. The Rocket I bought in the Basel Hilton from one of the then owners of the company ( Herr Fricker I think) who demonstrated it on one of the tables in the lounge! I sold all three models many years ago to finance more Marklin AAAAAGGGHHH! I will post a photo of the three I owned.
Howard.
