Over this past weekend we held our major exhibition for the year - Railex. We hadn't held an exhibition for 2 years, mainly because of a scarcity of venues in which to hold it. One of the venues we formerly used in Wellington priced themselves out of our market, and the Town Hall venue here in Lower Hutt was damaged by the 2013 Wellington earthquake and closed as a result. It has now been demolished and a new Town Hall is being built, but all this left us with only one venue that we could use, which we did in 2014 but we did not want to return to it in 2015.

In the meantime, a new venue has been built in Lower Hutt, primarily for holding netball games, but it proved to be ideal for holding our show at.

I haven't as yet sorted photos out, but here is a video of the exhibition taken by Trevor McGavin, a workmate of one of our club members.

Points of interest from a Marklin perspective

0:51 Our Club G1 layout Istein / Uri

13:58 Some Marklin / European layouts our club displays that kids can operate themselves

15:14 Our Club H0 layout Bergtalbahn

26:11 Our sister club The Manawatu European Club H0 layout

11:21 Not Marklin, but a 9mm scale layout that has a New Zealand Railways theme that features many trains that ran during the 1950's / 1960's.

As an aside, Trevor has posted to Youtube a video of his layout being shaken by the 7.8 earthquake we had here just over a week ago. If you ever wondered what happens to a model railway in an earthquake, wonder no more.

Trevor comments: "Video of model railway in Lower Hutt (about 16km northeast of Wellington, NZ), on 14 November 2016 being shaken by 7.8 Richter scale magnitude earthquake centred near Culverden in the South Island of NZ. Views are from three webcams, no sound, only video. Note the date-stamp is in NZST, 1 hour behind local time of NZDT, and running about 1.5 min slow. Strongest shaking I've ever felt in an earthquake, fortunately no major damage done in house."

Thanx David - some really stunning layouts.....and good to see many young ones there, and operating the trains too, clever thinking! Loved the look on the kids' faces at the Meccano stand, totally enthralled....Love

Trevor lives on the Hutt Valley floor, whereas I'm up on the Western Hills in Lower Hutt. The Valley floor is an old riverbed, so in a decent earthquake it shakes a lot more than what it would up here on the hill. It was bad enough here let alone where Trevor was.

It sure does, it got some use at the weekend. One of our fellow clubmembers went through 300mls of KM-1 smoke fluid over the weekend, and every time he turned it on a crowd would gather to watch and take photos.

No, it is actually scratchbuilt, by the same guy who built the green Ae 6/6 you see in some of the pictures.

I think so, I'll have to have a look. I've also got some photos of it before it was painted.

Some great layouts here (and photography to boot), but the best part is with everything that has happened in New Zealand the past few years, that you were able to put this together. Fantastic job!
