Hi everyone,

Easy question- does Marklin (or ESU?) make an affordable kit to convert older Marklin standard (round brushes) motors to basic-no frills digital? or do I have to buy the motor kit and a decoder elsewhere?

Asking as at the ~30 euro 60760 price point I'd probably start upgrading the whole fleet, but at double that I start hesitating....

Thoughts, tricks or ideas?

Hi John,

A similar priced upgrade kit is available from ESU for both LFCM and SFCM motors. The kit brings a lokpilot decoder and the appropriate permanent magnet for the type of motor.

I didn't have much luck getting the ESU magnet for the DCM to fit properly.. From memory it stuck out too far..

The question is about LFCM and SFCM locos.
Some of those require modifications for the 60943/60944 motor sets, but the ESU sets should fit without any grinding.

For DCM, the 60941/60760 is the better choice.

Regards
Tom

I have used ESU magnets to convert most of my DCM locos and never had a problem!

thanks everyone! Sorry for the slow reply as work has kept me off the forum a few weeks.

The esu kits seem to be the answer, at least vs Marklin parts and then buying a decoder. Has anyone actually tried one for the non DCM- type motors? I know their decoders are great, I'm just curious about the rest of the parts. Also- they don't include a 5 pole rotor, does that largely detract from performance?

Thanks!

In my experience the performance of those converted three-pole motors ranges from "acceptable" to "excellent".
I'd install five-pole Märklin parts when this can be done without modifications. I install the ESU magnets when I shy away from grinding motor parts or loco frames to make them fit.

That's funny, I could have written those exact words myself! Is there a danger I might actually agree with Tom on something? BigGrin
