I have just received this item 20997 which I mistakenly ordered instead of the regular 24997 uncoupling rail. I was first intending to return it with an explanation and request its replacement by a 24997 in my next order.
Then it struck me that I might as well keep it and avoid the trouble and expense of such a trivial return when the only apparent difference between the start-up version and the regular version is that the former lacks the built-in sockets to attach the uncoupling signal mast, and I can live without that.

Is this correct, or am I overlooking something?

The cable feed out of the ballast and the info that the electric operation is only doable with specific parts (only with the 72752 control box), is that an issue?

That is indeed the issue. The cabling and the attached plugs supplied mean that it is strictly true that as supplied it would only work with the 72752 control box, but that could also be said about the cabling and plugs on Marklin turnout motors, but we know that by removing these plugs the turnouts can be operated directly via other control boxes or digitally via other decoders.
So I was wondering if the same is the case for this decoupling rail, or if there is really some technical reason why it cannot be controlled by some other switch box or via a decoder like the 24997 standard uncoupling rail by simply changing the cable plugs.
I can understand that because it is a 'start-up' product that the Marklin instructions should explain how to use it 'straight out of the box' and not go into other possibilities. But although I am a newbie it struck me that there might be other possibilities.
