I just noticed a rather expensive freight car (4683) from a particular UK dealer (who has caused a huff here). Is this car worth the opening bid amount or is it wishful thinking? I notice this dealer is one of the priciest sellers in the Marklin and other areas.

Any comments?

It's probably quite rare. I don't know whether I would be prepared to pay this much but collectors tend to spend crazy money for some items.

OK, the wagon does not match the box. The picture on the box matches the Kolls description of how the wagon should be labelled according to Kolls, but the wagon appears to be a special according to what is written on the destination board.

However the collection where the seller obtained a lot of his stock also contained a number of wagons that appeared to be repaints by someone outside Marklin. Some of them are better than others, but none of the ones I saw were particularly good paint jobs. suspect this wagon is one of these, and he is putting a high price on it, possibly because he cannot find it in Kolls, so it must be a 'rare wagon'.

The 2015 Kolls catalogue gives a value of 12 Euro for a 4683, which was issued from 1989 to 1991. Kolls makes no mention of a special edition of this wagon in the standard catalogue. Normally it refers you to the 'specials' catalogue for special items, but it doesn't do this.

Personally if the price is not around the 12 euro mark I wouldn't touch it.

Alan (kiwialan),

Thanks for an informative answer. I had heard this dealer was involved in some sort of "changes" and I thought the price was too high. The box difference was not noticed and your observation was very helpful.

As the old saying goes. " If it is too good to be true, it cant be true " You apply this rule backwards and forwards.

IN NZ, there are traders who have very inflated views of the values of Marklin. Eg Marklin 3021 $475.00 [ appears to have a slight blemish in the roof line. ] Marklin 3024 $250.00, Marklin 3048 $345.00 and a Marklin 3027 fro $550.00 NZ.

I guess there is nothing wrong with asking good prices for your products if you have a market for them. I don't think it is the right market right now for those.

I bought an unused 3048 last year for $130.00

There you go.

Hi all,
Looking at that eBay listing, it sure is a beautiful tank car.
And if anyone wanted a one-off, I guess the price is immaterial.
The other pertinant factor is that this is a Wine Car, and there are collector persons who will pay large amounts just for that type of wagon.

It is very obvious that it is a custom re-paint tank car.
Read the inscription on the right side company plate. Real cars don't usually use the word "Modellbahn....".

Which brings me to a Trix passenger set of 2 cars (23395) released for 99 Euros in 2010.
I bid for this on eBay.de last week, and it sold for 214 Euros. So that MUST be rare!!!

I am also interested in the fact that antiquetoys1, with whom I have had pleasurable dealings, will no longer ship to Australia.
I wonder what is the cause of that??

regards
Kimball

Hi
I have purchased several items from this dealer and would suggest you need to be careful. If you look at all the items he as for sale, there appears to be some duplicates and these have different prices. I purchased a Marklin flat car with a Coca Cola tanker load, but this was an item made of two others.
I also purchased a Roco Re 465 BLS loco and have a problem with one of the coupler housings.

Harry,

I could not agree more! I noticed some very strange collections he is peddling as I reviewed all his items for sale. As you said there are too many duplicates and odd ball sets. I think he is basically a cr**k peddling snake oil. I am waiting to see if any more strange things are offered for sale then I will report him(if that means anything on E Bay).

The response from Antiquetoys1 as regards the question I sent him via E Bay:

Hi,
the item will be correct and made in a very small number and it's typical of a wagon made in very limited numbers that the box never matches the item.
I have a lot of items that are not in Kolls and as you well know, Kolls is often incorrect and should be used as a loose guide only.

You are good to go with the Buy it Now button.

Hi,

This is a commercially produced item though with the lettering probably not done by Marklin. I have one in my collection. I would agree the price is too high. However like everything else on E-bay if you don't like the price you do not buy. After all at the end of the day model railways are optional purchases.

Hi Peter,
If you purchase an item from this seller, and you are unhappy, "reporting" him is OK.
Unless you make that purchase, "reporting" him is entirely meaningless.

Antiquetoys1 runs a genuine business selling model trains.
His product sources are none of our business.
If I were to make a criticism of his selling, the only possible complaint is that his product descriptions are scant.
So it is up to the buyer to study the photos, and come to a decision.
That might turn many potential buyers away, and might be to his detriment, but that certainly does not make him a cr**k.

My dealings with him have been perfect.

regards
Kimball

Yes, that tanker corresponds to the Kolls description for that catalogue number.

Where did you see that, Geoff?

I just looked at a couple of his listings and it's postage free within the UK.

I think something must have gliched up on his eBay list.
A few days ago, it was saying "will not ship to Australia".
That has disappeared as of yesterday, and I successfully ordered a couple of items from him last night.

It depends on where the listing is viewed. If looking at US listings it says will not post to UK. If looking at UK listings then posting to UK is OK.

I haven't checked comparative prices for an item, but it could be that as he appears to be doing it as a business he has to pay VAT in the UK, but US listings don't include it, which is OK as it is being exported outside the EU.
