I was surfing eBay (actually looking at Blue Box 3047 locos) earlier this week and happen to come across an auction listed by eBay trader Williwill for a Marklin 55037 Gauge 1 Starter Set. The auction finished last night and having sniped a bid in the dying seconds I managed to win the auction some 50 euros short of my maximum bid amount. I have somewhat wanted one of these sets as Marklin hasn't produced any Gauge 1 Starter Sets for a few years and certainly not one with 2 locos, cars, track and a Central Station. The price I got it for means that I pay for the 2 locos (judging by recent eBay prices for them) and everything else is free. This got me thinking about Mega Premium Starter Sets that Marklin (big box with 2 layers in the box) have produced and Starter Sets in general and I realised we don't have any threads in the forum specifically on Starter Sets. So I thought I would open one - the closest I could find is https://www.marklin-user...s-or-train-sets-you-have but that includes car sets as well. There was also a thread on the 29500 Starter Set some years ago, but not much else. The other Mega Premium Starter Sets I can think of are 55033 G1 Starter Set (this contained a MS1 rather than CS1) 29848 H0 Starter Set with Big Boy and Santa Fe F7 with track and 6021 Feel free to post pictures and descriptions of any Starter Sets you have whether they are H0, 1 Gauge, Z Gauge or Trix N Gauge

I have a Swiss Mega Start Set, with Crocodile and Re6/6 (I think) came with a cs1, and a set of backdrop sheets (I think 5 sheets in total). I'll organise some photos next week.
The one set that i would have given my eye teeth for was the set that never made it to production because the bank put Marklin into receivership. That was the set that had a cs1, steam loco and wagons, can't remember if it was a diesel or electric loco (electric I think) with coaches, and a railbus and trailer. It is the only time Marklin did a three train Mega Start Set. It was to be part of the 150 year celebration, but Mr Pluta put the stop to all but the most basic start set production as he took over as receiver.
I also have a start set that wasn't in the general catalogue, I think it was a Eurotrain item, consisting of a class 260 diesel and track maintenance train. There are photos of it in the Marklin UK Club threads as I took it to Nigels in 2014, along with a host of extra wagons i have accumulated to go with it.

my first go at buy a box of marklin was the 26730 Crocodile set. The next one was the 29815 set. The problem for me is the fact that the boxes are so big. All my other marklin in the smaller boxes can be packed away neatly in an Oak manrobe, of which we have 3 in our house. The second one is starting to hold marklin as well. I do enjoy looking at what other members are collecting, but don't see the sense in collecting for the sake of it for me but if others like to do it, that's ok with me. I like to use my stuff and that where I get the enjoyment of the hobby.
Thanks Bigdaddy for showing us how to add photos, I have been waiting for something like that for a while. This analogue brain of mine is challenged by all the new devices out there. I was a member of the Wellington Marklin club [ my home area ] about 15 years ago but ended up letting my subscription lapse when there was confusion about my paying 2 years in advance the last time. Who do I contact to rejoin?

I tend to collect starter and mega sets, only because they solve a multiple number of needs for me. My first starter set that got me started, and was finally able to bring over from my last trip home to Australia is the good old classic Set S. Bringing it and the expansion sets as well as the extra locomotive and carriages that I had bought back lots of memories for me, so I'm going to start here. The locomotive and rolling stock aren't in the box, they're with my other rolling stock |

Moving on, now firmly back in the grasp of Marklin and 20 years later armed with a regular pay check, bought my first mega set. I got this purely for the amount of C track I got in one hit as well as the CS2. |

And it continued beyond that. I mentioned earlier that starter sets had multiple uses. They are great for the additional rolling stock and track, but also the transformer, which, depending on the deal, can be cheaper than buying said transformer separately which can be used (i my case for my M83 decoders). This particular one I found on eBay for $55... it was missing the loco and some of the track, but it did have the MS2... I chalked this one up as a win |

This was another eBay find. Again because of the MS2, the additional loco that would serve as a great freight unit and for what would become the inspiration of my eventual container yard portion of my layout is this one. With the MS2 from this and my other starter set, I can run 4 loco's at once. I don't need the transformer for the MS2 and so can be placed into use for my decoders. The extra track always comes in handy and this one has two switches. Sorry about the photo, I took it from a bad angle I guess and so the focus is awful |

Lastly, these two I picked up again along the way based on the deal. I wanted a cheap shunter and so 29162 fit that bill, as well as the rolling stock which fit nicely into my planned scene and that transformer. To offset the cost even further I sold the controller on ebay because I would have zero use for that. As for 29322, back to the track and switches and rolling stock and the transformer... you can never have too many transformer (or perhaps you can...) |

Another H0 Mega Starter Set (was the sk851/n set the first Marklin Mega Starter Set?), the 29840 set. Our club has this set, but I do not. I do however have the two locos from this set, which I purchased off one of our Australian forum members 7 or 8 years ago. Edit: I don't have the 4 Marklin green thunderbox cars from this set that go with the BR85, but I do have some equivalent Trix thunderbox cars. They make quite a nice train.

Of all the mega sets, this one is my favorite: Märklin 29440, Mega-Digital-Startpackung Epoche III It has it all, great locos and rolling stock, big R3 C track oval with both styles of turnouts equipped with motors and decoders and a CS2, the perfect mega start... Cheers, Gordon

I LOVE start sets. This is a set I have been eyeing and spoke about in another thread to complement my three REegio lighted wagons - but I would need to have lights installed so that they all have lights. See first photo. The problem is this loco does not come as a single unit and does not have so many sounds as its sister in a different livery. See second photo. I will check the speed before I buy it, of course. |

I have many starter sets and also locos or rolling stock bought separately from starter sets. I can only remember a few of them. I'm sorry, no photos...
29811 DB BR 221 (but without K-track and MS1) 29680 Swiss Mega Starter set (but without CS1) 29500 DB Mega Starter set (no locos anymore... But I got my CS2 from this) 29855 DB Mega Starter set (no Control Unit 6021 anymore...) Many more I don't remember
Also locos bought separately from sets like 29820, 29840, 29530, 29535, 29185 etc.
Starter sets are a good way to get cost effective locos, wagons and tracks.

Don't laugh, that actually happened once! Some years ago the Storeman received a package that was ticking. The Police were called and the whole building plus the surrounding area were cordoned off. They even had the bomb disposal robot out to handle the suspicious package.
It turned out to contain a mobile phone that was being returned to our team for re-purposing that had been left powered on meaning the phone's battery was going flat. The phone was beeping to warn of the flat battery.....
I got the box home OK, I had to take it out of the cardboard box it was in because it is so big! The set box filled up my car's boot! Plus it is really bulky to carry - a real pain to carry up the stairs. I have taken some photos, so will post them, but everything in the box looks brand new. I don't think the CS1 had ever been used as it had the plastic strip still wrapped around it. The CS1 is a v2, so it means I can use it as a remote to my CS2 if I want.

Hi Here is another one of my mega sets: the SK8464H or SK8464J (I have both sets, the other one is with german cars in red). It is a 1951 set. I love it Note: because the box was in very bad shape I covered it with a similar red lezard-looking-skin (alas not exactly like the one used by Märklin) Cheers Jean |

Hi Here is also a favourite the Märklin 3126 of 1959 (I think) *** Edit *** The set must be a late 1959 as it has a 3048 loco (Smoke and light conduits) and later sets were numbered 3148 This one was my dream when I started my first Märklin layout Cheers Jean PS I have others but I don't want to monopolize this great topic Edited by user 20 June 2018 12:59:01(UTC)

No photographs, but they have been posted by others.
My first was, I think, a 3122 in 1964 or 1965 as a birthday present. It came in the red “velvet “ box. The box is long gone but I still have the V200 and carriages, slough the latter are a bit worse of from wear, tear and age.
Several years ago I bought the 29181and 29500 which ignited an interest in digital operation.

My contribution (that restarted postings in this thread) is the 29680 Mega Digital Start Set. Supplied with a loop of track using R3 curves and a pair of 24711/2 points to make a passing loop, and CS1 with transformer for controller. Set was issued in 2007, I got it off ebay from a dealer about 2 years later as new stock. Unfortunately the photos of the set itself are not very good. Ian has a video of it running at his place last weekend, and a photo here of it double heading with a 39562 crocodile which is was issued the same year. But what did surprise me when I first opened it was it has a six piece backdrop scene, that I don't recall ever being advertised as part of the set. These are long enough to go along one long side and both short sides of the oval of track included in the set. The following pictures are of the back scene as laid out on the floor to photograph. I have tried to butt them together, but if you look close enough you can see the joins ... I think this is a standard backdrop available elsewhere, as I am sure I have seen similar ones on layout photos in this group.
