Can one of you well read folks please direct me to the part number for the crew step at the front right corner of SBB Re4/4 ll M.34345. This is the year 2000 limited edition model in experimental Turquoise/White colour scheme for SBB Cargo. My research so far has only found one exploded drawing for all of the Re4/4 ll models - they do not show this part - many thanks in advance.

Hi Paul - thanks for your reply, however this is the same drawing from the series that I referred to in my initial message. The part I am looking for fits UNDER the "Puffer" 489680 on the front of the "Aubau Lok" 224874. I have a hi res photo of the part - but do not know how to attach it to this thread. The Trittstufe is the same colour as the dark grey band at the base of the Lok body.

Graham,
If it is not on the spareparts drawing it apparently is not an available sparepart for this type of loco. Perhaps it is an integral part of the bodyshell? Or perhaps part of the plastic bogie shell? Have you asked the Marklin service department in Germany? It can take a while before you get an answer.

Thanks for the observations Paul - the Trittestufe is a 'detachable' part which plugs into the front end of the Lok body under the Puffer by means of two moulded pins. This is the first experience I have encountered where a removeable fitted part is not described in an official Maerklin document - some wiz at Goeppingen has gone to a lot of trouble in omitting this.
Do any of our other friends out there have an Re4/4 II of any colour that does or does not have this part - am I lucky or otherwise to have the only Re4/4 II (M34345) model with this part fitted?

According to the Helmut Kern website - M34344 and M37344 both in SBB Red livery from 1996/1998 and 1998/2000 - in a 'rebuilt' style, appear to show the Trittestufe fitted - so M34345 from 2000 is not alone. Can we assume that all Re4/4 II post 1996 are carrying the part, if so - why no amended drawing and part number.

Graham,
It appears that selected versions of the Marklin Ae 6/6 (six axles) have these extra steps fitted also. Please see the red Ae 6/6 as contained in startpacking 29463,it also has these steps under the buffers. The partcode for a set of buffers and one step is E176160. I am not sure whether it would fit to your RE 4/4,be careful there.
Marklin have always been very good in following real life alterations to locomotives,as such each model came out in various versions over time. Not mentioning extra parts on exploded view drawings is a serious omission.

Depends on what you mean by "all Re 4/4 II post 1996": If I understand the original query correctly, then our member is looking for the part on the left front side of the loco (when looking at the loco, not the view of the driver!), and this "step" is associated with the slanting handrail also on the left cab front plus the so-called UIC connector in the center of the front. Therefore, any Re 4/4 II / Re 420 / Re 421 with UIC connector and slanting handrail manufactured by Marklin should feature the step contraption - but not, however, an Re 4/4 II in TEE livery, because they ran in an earlier era. Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul for the feedback, I think we are getting somewhere. The exploded drawing at 29463 does show the 'steps' on the Ae6/6 at item 10 including the puffers - to all intents it looks like the same part, however the included parts list does not identify that number specifically. Is it the correct list for that Lok.

Hi Paul - part number set 176160 looks like the way to go - even with all the extra 'puffer' bits, many thanks again for your input

Point taken Unholz, M37343 from 2001 in TEE livery looks pre-rebuild and may not carry the steps

The part in question is known as the UIC Steps or UIC Treppen. It was added to SBB Loks of the classes Re 4/4II, Re 6/6 and Ae 6/6 in the 1990s to facilitate access to the new UIC connection which was built into the loks between the front windows under the top headlight. The new connection was not accessible from track level, so it was decided to modify the loks with these steps and the diagonal railing so that the crew could access this connection when needed.
Here is a list of Swiss models with this feature:
Re 4/4II 29859.2 29481/29483 Re 421 34344/37344 34345 37342 37345 Re 421 37346 37347 37348 37356
Re 6/6 37321 Re 620 37322 37324
Ae 6/6 37360 Ae 610 37362 37363 Ae 610 39361 39363
The part is listed as part of the kit including buffers for some models (as mentioned above).
I may have missed one or two
Regards
Mike C

Thanks for the excellent info Mike - this brings the whole thing into focus. Pity that Goeppingen failed to update the exploded drawings. There is a lesson here about handling the 'rebuilt' Re4/4 II body when it is off the chassis/frame and this may also apply to the Re6/6 - avoid placing it on its base, with the potential to dislodge the steps.
