Hello,

I purchased a Marklin Digital system for our son but he had little patience for my "coming up to speed" time. We shelved it. Now my daughter up is expressing interest, and I can make it work less than before! (OK, now we all know who we bought it for...)

First issue is programming the loco numbers, but real issue is lack of very basic knowledge. I think I am not completely stupid but I have done a lot of reading, blogs, manuals Etc,mostly it assumes a basic level of knowledge to begin with.

I am time-poor and was interested to see if anyone in the Perth area could give me a kick start. Look over what I have, tell me to upgrade this and ditch that, explain that the power supply needs to be 'on', describe the positioning of the trains to the track (you know, do they go on top or underneath.). I reckon it is on top.

Once I get a few basics, I think I will be ok. I was a computer programmer who now works on nano-technology, so I do think once I can address my locks, I will get that the dial makes them speed up or slow down for example.

I would be pay someone for what might be a couple of two hour sessions. Shall we say A1m?
I'd say probably not!

But if you are the right person and are interested, hopefully we could reach a deal.

I have a 6021 a couple of 6017's, a 6003 52va, half a dozen locomotives, a small, older Delta system, quite a lot of track, a 6040, a bundle of decoders, assorted less relevant accessories, powered and not, mostly in good condition, all purchased second hand. One of the locomotives actually runs. I have a bunch of manuals which I have read but I think the lie! :)

I live near the CBD of Perth.

I hope I hear from someone

Best Regards

Terry

Hi Terry,

Am interested in your story, and thought I would relay some thoughts on the matter.

Firstly, being time poor is no way to run a railroad.
Having been involved in model trains for a long time, I can say with some certainty, that getting something running involves a LOT of time.

I have built only two layouts in my lifetime that have been complete (more or less).
But if you like to see trains run, I suggest you buy one of the latest starter sets from Marklin.
They are available from a few dealers in Australia (or Aldi in the east), and they take all of 20 minutes to set up and run on the lounge room floor.

Anything more (multiple locos, rolling stock, accesssories) just takes up an inordinate amount of time.

I hope someone in the Perth area can see you, and tell you what a load of piffle I just told you.
But it has been well meaning, and I trust that you will see my advice for what it is.
By the way, one of my lifes mottos has been (learnt the hard way prior to 1968) is never take any advice from anyone, certainly don't act on it unless your gut feeling tells you it is OK.

regards
Kimball
