is it the purchase, the collection, enhancing your power motion, era or diversity, looks, pulling power, weight, metal or is it to keep up with the Jones ?

Not 110% sure if this is the answer you were after, but for me running the locos is the priority, and I just kinda buy ones I like the look of and can afford (it's why i have so many tank engines but few electric engines ). I don't really go for any era/type though, so my collection is a mess from Era 3-6 (or are we up to 7 now?) |

I wouldn't say it is essential for me to show my locos, but it is something that I find rewarding.
It is human nature to be proud of our possessions, especially if we consider them objects of beauty or value. When I buy a loco it is because something about it has caught my eye. Whether it be that it is particularly suitable for operating on my layout or because I just want to add it to my collection because of its looks, when it comes into my possession I feel good about it. I show it to my family members, and I show it to my friends on the forum.
Most people find something nice to say about a new purchase, so it is gratifying when you post a picture of a new loco and you get a few "Likes". It's even nicer when someone goes out of their way to comment on it. I don't buy locos to get these reactions, but it's nice when I do.
As to the other 'implied' part of your question, I don't think many of us would buy locos just "to keep up with the Jones's". I might be inspired to get a similar loco if I've seen one I like in someone else's collection, but only because I like it, not because someone else has it and I have to have it too!

Yes, I'm happy I have my current 57 Loks out, either on the layout or on their shelves. I enjoy the running most of all and sharing info with other forum members. Peter
