Is there a trick to soldering the new Marklin or Viessmann catenary? I know officially it states no soldering required, but in practicality any small touch or bump tends to knock the wire off.

I'm not sure what material the Viessmann wires and Y connectors are made of, but solder does not seem to flow to make a connection.

Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,

I have the Viessmann catenary and I have not needed to solder any of it. It sounds to me like your mast spacing is not quite right if the wires can easily be knocked off. Make sure that the wires are under tension at all times.

You can sometimes add a bit of tension by sliding the wires to the ends of the hangers on the curves, making them go a longer way round, if you see what I mean.

Hi Ray,

I understand that they do not require soldering. The mast spacing is fine and everything is usually under tension. However, when an inadvertent hand or something accidently knocks a wire off, it becomes a snowball effect and I spent some time making sure everything is back the way it should be. So I have now started to solder the connections at the masts and that is the reason for my question. Since my catenary is electrified I also use the Y seil and this is what doesn't seem to want to accept solder.

So my question remains to those that have previously indicated that they too solder the catenary - is a special solder or flux required?

Thanks
Peter

if it stainless steel you can forget about it, or a forged metal, like Roco's pantograph, you can't solder them when they break. just out of interest how much more expensive is Sommerfeldt comparing it with Märklin or Viessmann, yo can try a acid free flux but I can't see any reason you would need it, its more likely to do with the type of material the y seil is made of.
