Hi there,
Rather untypical question I guess, but what other place to ask it ;) My other half wants a "good and nice" book about locomotives and technology behind for X-mas. Nothing very specialist (like for engineers), but nothing lame either (we have an album about railway history, in our native language which is Polish, full of pictures, but that does not cut it for her). Something where one could read how the steam engine works, what were the materials used for railroad and loco construction, etc. And it would have to be easily purchasable in Europe. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Woj

I'd say that the "The complete book of locomotives" by Colin Garrat is a great "introduction book" for locomotives and their design through times around the world. https://www.amazon.com/C...in-Garratt/dp/1844768775 As with all books that claim to be "complete", it's not, but a very interesting book anyway... Mostly pics and data but not the deeper technical explanations. But the evolution of technology is described well in "layman's terms".... If you can read German, I would also recommend a visit to http://dlok.dgeg.de/ for detail explanations of how different types of steam locomotives work... And if you are especially interested in the German view of steam locomotive history, I can recommend this : https://www.amazon.com/D...nst-Maedel/dp/3344709127 |

Hi,
I think the follwoing book is generally available in Europe, because it was originally published in Germany in that language, but is certainly available in English. I have the English language version.
The book is edited by Thomas Hornung, and the English title is Legendary Trains. I think the title may vary, depending on who published it. But a search for the author should do the trick, as he is well regarded, and has done other books.
This book is not so technical, and has a leaning toward Europeean trains, but does reference those in US, Britain and other continents. It covers the early history of railways, and then goes into some detail about how steam engines developed into modern machines. It then covers the increasing use of diesel and electric power. It is a very large book of over 400 pages.
When I started with Marklin in 2006, I found this book excellent research material to help identify German locomotive models.
