Märklin BR 216 (3075) - Ball Bearing and LED rear lights

Hello, I like to present my latest project, the Märklin 216 025-7 with the old big slice collector motor. I own this model since about 35 years, digitalized four years ago with an Esu LokPilot V3 and Esu permanent magnet. 1. Ball BearingsTo improve the driving performance, I planned to install ball bearings to the motor shield. This is not so easy like it is with the standard drum collektor motor. The diameter of the anker axle is 2mm. Therefore, You need to use a 5mm ball bearing! I drilled first with a 1.5-4mm center drill, then I did the final drilling with a 5mm drill bit: With slight pressure, the ball bearing fits well into the drilling hole and needs no superglue: This is the best position for good driving performance, the snap ring holds the anker in place: The rest is standard for digital conversions: - Esu permanent magnet - test DC-Motor with DC power withlout digital decoder - conncet digital decoder and optimize motor settings Video vom Motor und Fahrtest folgt später... 2. LED rear lightsThere are no openings for the rear lights in the case of the Märklin 216 025-7. You have to drill the holes by yourself and fit fiber optics for the rear light : Then I used UHU Alles kleber Super superglue to fix two red SMD LEDs onto the fiber optics: And here a first test with fiber optics mounted and 9V battery: To be continued... |

I like your method of mounting the red LEDs. Well thought out.
I have a 36xx version of this loco in blue/cream. I will have to look at what you have done when I come to upgrade the decoder in that.
What did you use to fill the holes you drilled?

But I'm not really happy with this, because it is not clear but opaque. The advantage is, You can cut it with a sharp knife. But I will search for an more clear alternative looking more like glass. Maybe this one looks better: http://www.modellbahn-ho...tstoff----4--DurchmesserIt can be polished, so the surface should look more shiny and the material seems to be a bit more like plexi glas. |

Today, I found a good solution for the fiber optics of the rear lights: http://www.conrad.de/med...06_BB_00_FB.EPS_1000.jpgThese fiber optics are 2mm in diameter - perfect! The front lense is bright polished and convex. I ordered a piece with 4x8 of such plexi fiber optics. I will cut it in the needed length and polish the back end. I assume, it will be a very nice bright and clear red light. This 4x8 piece with 32 fiber optics is only 1,69€! |

What is the part number that Conrad uses (as distinct from the picture URL)?

Ah hah, the picture is telling 'porkies', the part number you gave is for a single row that has only 8 light pipes on it. data sheet here, which lists all the combinations from the manufacturer. I can also find the same item at farnell,Onecall/element14 (or whatever name they are using today) but at £1.73 each and have to buy 10 seems a bit much. I'll have to see if Conrad UK has them listed. Still, a nice find

I missunderstood the description "4-reihig/8-fach", so the partnumber seems to be for 2 rows with each row 4 pipes (grid dimension 2.54mm). A single row are with "B = -", because the single row has no grid. 20 pipes in 4 rows with 5 pipes each is this one: http://www.conrad.de/ce/...assend-fuer-SMD-LED-0603 Moritz |
