In 1957 HAMO introduced the Multiplex system, which in my opinion is the forerunner of todays Delta ans Digital systems. A device was build in a locomotive, and each device responded on the left or right side of the transformer. In this way, you could run with 2 locomotives on 1 track. The system was suitable for AC and DC systems. HAMO became later part of Märklin.

Has anybody pictures or more information about this system ?

This was a halfwave system.
One regulator put only the positive halfwave from the transformer on the track. The other regulator gave only the negative halfwaves.
In the trams there was a diode in series with the motor. In one tram the diode was connected in such direction that this tram only responded to the positive halfwaves. In the other tram the diode was connected the other way, so that this tram only responded to the negative halfwaves.

Hi Nico,

Sounds like a simple device, but how about changing direction? Or could these trams only run in 1 direction?

Just wondering.

Regards,

Hans

Yep, the consequence of the system was that it was a one-way thing.
But in real life that's not uncommon for trams.

Anybody run Faller AMS, the H0 Slot cars in the 1960's? They had the same system; I think the connecting track had two connetions at each side, four double connectors in all, plus a power conection. Similair to Märklins Ugly Box! Normal cars had just a DC motor, so which connection was used by the control unit decided the diretion of travel. For racing it made sense to run both cars in the same direction, and for model traffic germans could have right traffic, and we swedes together with the brittish could run on the right (=left) side!

However, either the left or the right power pickup of the cars could be replaced with one with a diode, enabling the control of two cars on one side, travelling in the same direction (!).

All if I remember correctly.

Regards,
Lars

Not directly related, but I just think this is fascinating: even all those years ago, the big thing was to be able to run more than one train on the same track at the same time. And nothing has changed! Only the technology has become a bit more sophisticated, that's all. But it's impressive what those guy managed to come up with in the 60s and 70s.

I think this is the most important factor for operating realism. Because, let's face it, unless you are modelling a single-track dead-end branch line, you are going to want to run more than one train simultaneously...

Some Faller AMS nostalgia?

A wonderful homepage from a Dutchman, in German only.

(Unfortunately, I never had the luck to own an AMS set.)
