If you have some basic soldering skills - get down to your local electronics store and buy a pair of 0.1" Header sockets and a half meter length of multi-coloured Ribbon Cable of at least 6 strands width - split the cable into 6 strands if wider (6 pins on CS2/S88) a suitable number of connecting pins should be supplied with each socket.
Do not twist the cable when soldering the pins on - it must remain flat so that you can check that the appropriate cable colours match from end to end. A minor modification may be need to one socket - there could be "polarising" bar moulded in - remove this with a sharp modelling knife and make a test fitting - either on S88 or CS2 - depending on which end you will fit. Insert the pins into the Header socket - make certain they are all facing the same way.

I offer no guarantees with this method, but it has worked for me - and is cheap.

Great tip for me, if Maplins here in London, have the parts. Went there last week for this sort of parts and nobody had a clue what I was talking about.

Maplins have a selection of 2.54mm (0.1") PCB Socket/Headers [FY94C] - that could be cut down plus suitable Sockets pins [YW25C] and 6 Way White Sheath Alarm Cable [YS54J] or Brown Sheath [VK88Y] if Ribbon cable is unavailable. Some of these part numbers could be a little risky - so a personal search would confirm.

Thank you Graham,
I went again yesterday to my local Maplins, here in Streatham, and might as well have asked for something from Mars. This is a very recently opened store so assume the staff were recruited locally and don't know their stock or their subject.
Thanks for the item numbers which I will quote on Monday when I make my third visit.

A search of the Maplins website indicates that only the FY94C header is available, I came across it yesterday but the other numbers are not recognised at all.

Will visit a different store for better knowledgeable staff.

Have come across LDT's site and this gives an option to the Marklin price for it's 6089 cable.

If Maplins have the FY94C 10 way Header Socket [which needs cutting down to 6 way] , then you could assume they also carry Socket pins of 10 piece strips? In terms of economy - a 12 way Header cut in half or a safer 17 way cut to 2 x 6 way could be an alternative.

An interesting observation - LDT are using what appears to be 6 Way Alarm Cable, maybe 3 twisted pairs - on their 6089 version cable. I have heard rumours that Ribbon Cable under certain conditions can be subject to electro-magnetic interference on this type of setup, hence the perceived limit of 2 meters with "off the shelf" lengths - are there any of our members who could clarify this - thanks in advance.

Confirmation at www.Maplins.co.uk that Header Terminal contact pins are available on YW25C at the following stores as of todays date - Streatham, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, Forest Hill, Croydon and Putney at £1.09 per 10 piece strip - it also appears that 10 way Headers are the largest they stock.

Looking around I found this to update your s88 and keep Radio interference down. http://www.floodland.nl/...info_s88_kabels_en_1.htm

Thank you Graham H0 for that info , I went today and got the parts after quoting their numbers. Do I cut the pins into single pieces for insertion into the header?

Oliver, I have looked at this site recently and written to them for a quote on 2 x S88 to S88N adapters costing €7.50 each and received a reply today quoting €7.50 postage which I think is a bit steep so will have to think on it for a while.

I searched EBay and finally came across "5 x 6-way latching pin header" exactly what I want. The Maplins ones need soldering whereas the, I think, just clamp the wire.

I also came across 2.54mm pitch 6 core ribbon cable ( will cut ends off)

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Separate the contact pins with a pair of snips - when offering up the bare cable ends [do not over cut the insulation] for soldering, if this is the method you have chosen. Make sure there is sufficient free cable length to spread across the Header width. Try to support the pins in a clamp of some sort - this will make for a stable and neat job.

You will observe that each pin has a "one way hook" that when fitted will engage with a pre-formed slot in the Header - make sure you take care with this part as any misalignment will result in a poor fit. If this happens you will almost certainly have to start again and remove the offending pin - with difficulty - be warned - good luck.

Graham,
Thanks for this last bit of advice. I have managed to put a lead together that fits the feedback and will test the connections at the earliest opportunity.

Cheers
