Dear experts - I have been given the task of selling a large collection of Marklin model train items. A huge task, as i have no previous knowledge of this topic, but i do know that this collection is worth a fair amount of money. The set varies between 30 - 40 years old ?

My father in law, who has cancer, has asked me to sell it for him. He and my husband had many years of enjoyment with the tain set and have kept everything in immaculate condition.

I am at present listing every item, but can tell you that it has one diesel engine (3021), one other steam engine (3048) and another main steam engine, which i am currently trying to identify. They have approx 20 carriages between them, 2 control boxes, Level crossings, double slip point, approx 5 signals, 2 x 536 bridge pieces, 2 large arched bridges and another 4 bridge sections, station masters cottage, trees, fencing, posts, tracks and points approx 14 boxes.

Of course, i will need to list it thoroughly.

It also has a manual 0331 Gauge HO track layouts.

I could take it to auction, but we would love it to go to a Marklin collector who will enjoy it as much as my husband and his father have done.

Can anyone help me try to price this collection, or give me some advice. Many thanks xx

Prices will depend a lot on condition, the 3021 and 3048 are not rare but do have value. I would watch items on Ebay and see what they go for. "collection is worth a fair amount of money" means different things to different people. The best thing is to do as much research as you can on each item and take good pictures of them so that you can get fair market value for them.

There was a lot of marklin items made in the 60's and 70's, Items from the late 40's and 50's will go for more do to the amount limited amount that were made part numbers from the 50's are also different. Items like M track don't go for much and is usually sold in bundles. again look through ebay to see how things are solid individually or in bundles.

KOLL'S Price Catalog's for Marklin is good source for high end Auction prices but doesn't always reflect market value, it could help identify if you have a rare item but the cost of the book is high and it is hard to find. It would most likely take a big cut into any of your sales.

Thanks dntowner i have found the engine same set on ebay after your post, for £375.00. The ebay one was immaculate, but only has the one engine, which does help. I now just have to investigate the rest xx

I would use eBay (sold) prices as a guideline for the amount that you could get for a particular item. I would particularly pay attention to ebay.de, ebay.ch and ebay.com for a comprehensive overview. In the UK, there are several auction houses that frequently host toy and model RR items, like Vectis, to name one.
There are also consignment Auction houses in Germany, Switzerland and other countries. One that I have dealt with (as a buyer) was Dorenbach (www.dorenbach.ch) in Basel. They list coming and previous auctions and publish the start prices and end prices of items. You will have to decide which option will render the best compensation. There are also many shops in Europe who buy and sell used collections and items. It is important to remember that you will probably get more money from a collector than you would from a dealer/buy and sell auction house or other intermediary, who want to get your items at a low cost so that they can resell and make a profit on the transaction.

Not to dissapoint, but I think 75 GB pounds for any of the items listed might be more realistic than 375.

3021's in good shape with box can be had for $100US all day long, and a 3048 in the same condition for $150 or less. The members here can give you a reasonable valuation on things.

(PS - I'm not an interested buyer regardless of price, just trying to help out with a 3rd party valuation)

Hi shewolf, welcome to the forum even if possibly only briefly.

As others have pointed out, there are two main considerations;

1: What the exact item/s are - you've listed a couple and this is a good start, the itemised list and some photo's will be a huge help.

2: Condition is everything. The 60's and 70's were in some opinions relatively 'dull' years for Marklin. Sure there were some very collectible models produced during this time, but often these were accidental - ie, a model that was simply not popular at the time (maybe for several years) and was finally withdrawn from the program, and then interest is sparked in it, and everyone wants one because it's rare, not neccessarily because they actually like it - the reason it never sold well in the first place. Sometimes 'collectors' operate in spite of themselves!! (I'm sure I've been guilty of it at times)

Please do be very careful not to get excited by 'ebay prices'. Many of us use Ebay frequently, but you must be guided by actual realised SALES, not what people are asking. Almost weekly we have amusing stories here of outrageous prices being asked for various items which are either not particularly rare, or that are in quite poor condition. As the old anecdote goes in a Tavern that any girl (or guy) looks good after enough alcohol, so too there seems this assumption that if it's Märklin it's valuable, and the condition becomes secondary.

On the other hand, assuming the items you have available are as well-cared for as it sounds, then there is absolutely a good market for them. The most humble of Marklin's items in good condition (and particularly with original box) will get a fair market price, and you can be assured that the advice you receive here will be fair and honest.

Some wonderful trades have been done here in the past similar to your circumstances and the connection you feel to the trains along with knowing they might go to an new appreciative home can be far more satisfying in respect that the item has been chosen for what it is, not what it's worth.

The quoted 3021 is a good example - this loco is available in several variations and which to the untrained eye (no pun intended) would all look identical. It's a nice heavy loco and runs like a dream but are also often found in only average condition. Their solid weight sometimes works against them should they take an unfortunate tumble to the floor, because more damage can result.

Keep us updated, ask as many questions as you like, particularly if you are trying to identify something.

And a tip to help guide us will be to include the printing date code from the box for the item. All Märklin boxes from that era have a printing code and it's always in the same format. For rolling stock it's easy, it will be on one of the end flaps and in the general format like "69565 YN 0267 sh".

This somewhat cryptic code tells us some info about the packaging itself. "YN" can be decoded to the quantity printed (of that particular box or leaflet - NOT the number of items manufactured), the all-important printing date, in this example "0267" means February 1967 and who the actual printer was. The Loco boxes for that era are probably of the 'folded corner' type possibly with polystyrene inserts. The printing code on these can be a little harder to find because you may have to unfold the end to expose it if it's not more visible. They are not usually glued and generally unfold easily, but with care.

Please take these as a guide only because mixups have happened. In your case, if the items were all purchased brand-new from an authorised dealer, then it could be safely assumed that the boxes will match the items and it can help narrow down an approximate production date.

As I say, this is just to help date some of the items.

We're all looking forward to seeing what you have BigGrin

Regards from Melbourne

As cookee wrote above, Marklin boxes hold a lot of information ... for further detail on the identification codes used, you can read up on this thread : https://www.marklin-users.net/forum/yaf_postsm283185_7051-age.aspx#post283185

Hope that helps ^^
