you can probably find a free 20A (@ 12V) supply by using the power supply from an old PC...

Normal PC power supplies do not have double insulation - NEM disallows this type of power supply (but your home is your castle and you can ignore NEM regulations).

PC power supplies usually have the negative terminal connected to mains ground. This can give funny (or maybe even not so funny) effects. So be careful.

I'm thinking of using the marklin 60130 converters, which give both an AC and DC outputs from a DC input.

hi Shintaro
remember one of the cardinal rules regarding power supplies
If you don't use the supply recommended by a manafacturer
they are quite within their rights to not honour any warranty
on say a signal, or points engine etc because you used other than
the recommended power supply. We see quite often people coming in
saying something is not working and often they have changed supplies
and voltage and amps are not the same and wonder why they have a problem
so what can appear cheap, can be a disaster as often the cheap supplies are
unregulated meaning while they say 12volts often they are giving off 16 or more
and then end up blowing things up and one thing digital does not like is power
supplies that are not acccurate and stable

True, also there is the possibility that a chain reaction of failures can happen.
This is one of the reasons that I do not use the output of the central unit on my layouyt and opt for only boosters to power my layout. Boosters are cheaper to replace than a central unit.

In the end using manufacture brands of model railroad equipment designed for your brand of models is the safest way to go.

Matthew

good grief folks.... I have been using a 3 x 16VAC 100W (300W total) power supply to power my digital system for over a decade without any problems ever.

PC power supply are extremely good DC power supplies and are switching power supplies to boot! I have been using it with the common ground of my layout, again without any problems.

You can spend your money as you like, but you wont catch me believing the baloney that manufacturers tell you about using 3rd party equipment. Sure one could use the wrong power supply and damage something, but simply reading what it claims to do and confirming that with a measurement will serve you well. If you cant do that,
pay away....

IMHO there is nothing wrong about using 3rd party power supplies. Just make sure they are safe even with permanent short circuits.
I do use 3rd party switching-mode power supplies for MRR - but they have double insulation and are not earthed.
Earthed power supplies should normally be safe, but NEM disallows them for public displays and I wouldn't want our children to play with them.
