Hi,
I'm trying to identify and solve a few questions I have from my grandfather's old train set. I came across it the other day and was wondering how old it is. Unfortunately he's not around anymore to ask, so, I'm looking for help from here. We ran it when i was a kid ad it still worked but hasn't been set up in the last 10 or so years. I pretty sure it is pre-war as he told me it was the only toy he was allowed to bring from Austria to Canada. Here are some photos. Thanks for the help!

Looks like an old R700 to me (circa 1938) but I can't equate that with the blue colour or teh "901" on the smoke box door. Is the blue paint job original, do you think?

cheers

Welcome to the forum: XYZ ?

The R 700 has one headlight in the middle of the smoke box door.
the brushes being placed between the 2 axles is correct, the overall shape of the loco indicates a R 700.
the wind reflectors are smaller
it only has 1 dome
the horizontal handrail is secured by 2 split pins
both windows seem to be slightly larger in height
although the tender looks identical, the coal bunker side walls look higher and the side panels of the coal bunker have a longer declining angle.
Handrails going along the water tank.
The cylinder valve is higher
2 cross pipes on the cylinder are not present.

Regarding the coaches, the same thing, cant locate them.
there are similar coaches but with 4 axles and not 2.

her is photo, for sale on ebay

I could not say if it is an earlier or later model.
Unless someone on this forum has a more comprehensive knowledge about this loco I would suggest getting in contact with Märklin and send them the pictures and see what they can come up with.
the loco is a Gauge 0 and not HO and was produced around the 1930's.

Welcome to the forum

You may want to get this topc moved to Collectors Corner as there are probably people better acquainted with O gauge over there

My guess is..

The engine is an R 910 (20Volt) made between 1931 and 1937 ... I think the red paint on the body/boiler may be a later touchup

The front carriage is an 1874 (0) made between 1926 and 1931..

Cant determine the numbering on the rear carriage ..

Cheers
