Hi Eric,

not at all.

Now for example you can make screenshots either by connecting the CS2 to the internet rooter or by connecting the CS2 with a crossover cable to your network card.

Not to mention functionmapping.
You can also save your decoder adjustments to a file.Smile

Best regards

I'm not quite sure what happened there (i.e. why it didn't successfullyt update the first times) -- perhaps a network-guru can explain that.

Sounds like you connected the CS2 to another network, where DHCP was configured to release 192.168.1.XXX adresses and and kept it, which it shouldn't have happened.
Every time a PC-like box starts up, it queries for an address to be released by DHCP, but in your case something didn't work right.
Did you have that setting for DHCP before or connected the CS2 to a network that was issueing addresses from that range?

No, nothing's changed in my home network since the last update!
I certainly haven't connected the CS2 to another network (I've hardly used it at all, actually)
I really don't know where it got the idea to be 192.168.1.x

So, a tip -- if the CS2 connects, but the update fails, check the IP address of the CS2 versus what your router thinks it should have.

Mine failed to update the first time. The TCPIP address on the CS2 is statically set, but the problem was that I had inadvertently set the network mask to 255.255.0.0 rather than 255.255.255.0

The CS2 was able to communicate to other devices on my home network (PC, CS1), but the problem started when it needed to go outside of the home network. The mask setting controls how many allowable hosts there can be on the network. A 16 bit mask (255.255.0.0) allows 65536 hosts, but a 24 bit mask (255.255.255.0) only allows 256 hosts. Because the CS2 thought the network size was bigger than it actually was, it couldn't properly cross the router to go to the internet.

Changing the setting fixed the problem and allowed the CS2 to update.

You could try again but first ensure your USB stick has the correct update by again downloading from the site.
Make sure you hit the USB button on the screen and also the update button when asked.

No results.
I have a doubt: previous updates had two different files, one.tgz, the other I do not remenber, and both were downloaded to complete the update. ¿Can be that the explanation?

Julio,

The USB stick cannot have any other files or folders on it besides the most recent update file. Delete all folders and files, download the current update and try again.

No.

The update file must be in the root folder.
There can be other folders on the stick, this will not disturb the update.

You're on the safe side if the update file is the only file in the root folder (I don't know if other files are allowed).

You don't have to delete other files, just move them to a subfolder.

Tom

Is it correct that after this, MFX-locs have to be put on a part of track which has MFX-communication?
The locs in my shadow stations (powered bij 6017-boosters) did not react after the update. After I (manually) put them on a CS2-powered piece of track they waited a few second, and came to life again.

Why is this?

Interesting that you say this. My CS2 with update 1.4.0 and GFP 1.35 only updates my MS2 to v1.4.

Is there something extra in the USB update that is not in the Internet update?

Julio,

These steps are from the Marklin Digital Club Newsletter.

Regards,

Thomas

........................................

Download this file from the website.

http://www.maerklin.de/d...ds/software_updates.html

cs2update.tgz

(Note - use a slim width USB stick, a wide USB stick may not seat properly or completely into the CS2 USB port. Avoid a USB stick with U3 software or password / security features. The downloaded update file must be in the root folder of the USB stick. There cannot be any other CS2 updates in the root folder)(This is simply technique but consider removing the track power from the CS2 during the upgrade, also perhaps any booster to avoid problems?)

1. Insert a USB memory stick in the USB socket on the computer.
2. Connect to one of the download web sites.
3. Right click on each of the two files listed above and store them on the USB stick. This process will unzip each of the files.
4.Correctly eject the USB stick from the computer.
5 Connect the Central Station to a transformer and start the Central Station.
6. Insert the USB stick into the USB socket in the back of the Central Station.
7. Choose the “Setup” menu.
8. Press the word “Update program” (if “Update program” does not appear on the screen, select the “CS” menu on the bottom of the blue screen. After pressing the word " Update program", in the screen must be read first the word "loading", next comes "updating").
9. If the program asks for a confirmation press the green check mark.
10. Wait until the program has finished up loading. It may take a few minutes.
11. Select the “Setup” menu.
12. Select the “Version” option.
13. You should see the new version number on the screen.

14. If you do not see the new version number:
15. Select the “CS” menu.
16. Select “restart”.
17 Wait until the Central Station has restarted.
18. Remove and re-insert the USB stick.
19. Repeat steps 7-13 above.
20. If the update does not work, erase the USB stick and repeat the entire process

After the installation is complete, select “restart Station” from the “Setup” menu.

CAUTION: Be sure the memory stick is clear of any software updates for the Station. Some people have accidentally left updates for earlier software versions on the memory stick and it has caused the system to freeze. When this happens you are locked out and cannot call up any menus to correct it. There is a solution if this happens to you. On the German web site, www. Maerklin.de, in the FAQ link, there are two programs that can be downloaded to the USB stick and inserted to restart the Station.

4. Wait until the program starts. This can take up to 5 minutes.
5. In the Setup menu [shutdown]
6. If the shutdown is complete, remove the USB stick.
7. The files reparatur.sh stick.sh and delete on the USB stick
8. Both on the stick and the device is a backup of the previous data of the device

The files are stick.sh and reparatur.sh Beitrsg attached as an appendix.

Not sure what you're trying to say, but all the upgrade needs is the file cs2update.tgz in the root folder of a USB memory stick.

You can unzip cs2update.tgz on your hard disk (e. g. to read the online help (HTML format)), but don't copy these to the stick.

It seems the file cs2update.md5 is no longer available. It's not required.

Charles, the root folder = the very top level of a directory structure.

If you downloaded the USB update, then you should have a file called CS2update.tgz

Yes there is an update to V1.5 MS2, but it has not changed in the log, so we dont know what has change from V1.4.

I am on my forth attempt and still no luck. I have the down load on the desk top and have dropped it on the stick icon and that shows up the same as the D/L I the put the stick in the cs and that is not easy as the stick hard up to the cs body and a job to get in .I then go to set up press the USB icon and then update. The stick does not flash rapid when the data is moving over and when it tells me I have been unsuccessful and I press the green tick the internal icon is black not the usb. Can I bring the CS down to the computer plug it into the mains with the TRANS and take the modem cable out of the computer and put it in the CS and just press update. I know computer can be a pain in the bum but as far as I am concerned if something does not work first time it is no good to you. Lets face it is 2010 if you think what APPOLO had in computer power and that worked first time.

Charles PS sorry for the rant.

I have just tried once more and it has told me the update has been successful but when I checked it is still HW 3.1 SW1.02 [1] . That is it life is to short as I do not know what all the updates are since I bought the CS2 then I have not missed anything.

Hello:
Good news. Finally I succeed in the update attempt.
After reading Charles post that described the difficulties in connecting the USB stick to the Central Station, that may have produced a incomplete contact I tried again wih a very narrower USB stick. And it worked¡.
By the way, I think that the USB port is not well designed, leaving no spaces to connect some types of USB sticks.
Also, I will like to thank Thomas ( El Capitan), for his detailed post, that helped me to follow step by step the procedure.
And for Charles , the last tip: after pressing the word " Update program", in the screen must be read first the word "loading", next comes "updating". In my previous unsuccessful attempts, the screen started with the word "updating", confusing me.

Hello.

First of all I am on a MAC. I am completely lost on this What is a root folder never heard of that one and how do I unzip the up date. Last night I down loaded the CS2 usb up date from the Marklin site and I have it on the desk top.Do I need CS2.tgz instead.

Charles.

I just tried this on my MAC and it has worked for me.

I saved the file cs2update.tgz from the website to my desktop and kept the same name.

Plugged my USB memory key into the MAC and waited for it to register. I am using just a plain USB memory key, not one with the U3 feature as this will create more than one drive letter. There is also no security features on my USB memory key, just a plain memory key no features.

I then copied the file cs2update.tgz from my desktop to the memory key, do not place the file in any folders on the memory key. Keep the same name of cs2update.tgz

Eject the memory key.

Insert the memory key into the CS2, I did this part after the CS2 was fully powered up.

Click on the Setup button near the top right of the main screen.

Click on the word CS or CS2.

Select the USB Stick option.

Click on the Update Program button.

Click on the check mark when prompted to initiate the update.

You should now see a light flashing on your memory key showing that there is activity during the update process. This is indicating that the file on the memory key is being downloaded to the CS2.

After the update process, you should see a message that the update was sucessful. Click on the check mark to close the window.

Your CS2 should now be updated to the latest version which was downloaded from the website.

Hope this helps in your quest to update your CS2 to the latest version.

Regards
Matthew

Hello Matthew.

I will give that a go tomorrow with a bit of luck. I think my problem is the USB stick is too wide and is not going in far enough. I have not been promoted to tick the green tick to go on.As all my USB sticks are the same I will keep one just for the CS2 and I will cut the corner off the plastic body so it will go fully in.
Many thanks to all of you for your help.

I do have one question to ask. Has anyone had any problems after they have done the update. As I am at the moment the last thing I want to do is to go backwards. I have had a good week so far with putting some extra feeder wires in on the lower level and alpine level.

Hi Charles. I am pretty hopless with computers but have not had any problems with the Marklin update. My USB stick fits fine and it is just a matter of ticking all the right boxes after that.
I have no idea what the update is or what it has given me as a benefit and I expect Marklin will not tell us (unless written in German somewhere I cant find it)
Maxi has given you great information which if you fllow should be OK.
Glad the feeders are working for you.

dave.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Hello Nev:
My answer to Thomas was polite: he wrote in spanish, I answered in the same language.
But I understand your position.
So here is the translation:
"Hello Thomas:
Thanks for your help.
Congratulations for your excellent written spanish, not as good as my english.
Regards.
Julio Montt"
