They first of them came in the old strong boxes, without the transparent foil. I guess only the first year or two.

If there is a serial number at the bottom, then you can tell the year from that (from color and first digit).
The details had been posted here (will have to search it).

The box should also have a production code.

Tom

I guess it is between 1972 and 1980.

Hi
Could not find a serial no. on the loco.
The box has the no's 60 177 Ya 08 89 sr on it.
The instructions say it can be converted with a 7180
five star kit.It also mentions a convert to digitial
using a c80 decoder.
Can this help narrow down it's year of manufacture.
Thanks again
Ian

Hi Ian,

That means the box was printed in 1989 (08 89 is the month and year), so the loco is probably 1989 too, or possibly slightly later. From 1982, this loco has die-cast cross-heads (the sliding bit on the valve gear) as opposed to folded sheet-metal.

Possibly, the chassis number label will be under the pony truck - you might be able to see it if you move the pony truck to the side, or else if you remove it.

Hope this helps!

So this loco was made in 1990! The first digit of the chassis number is the last digit of the year. Analogue locos do not have an initial letter designating decoder type.

So I think that's a complete dating process!

Best wishes,

Ian, I converted mine very successfully with a 60760 kit. If you want a better decoder you can always replace the one in the kit with a lokpilot V3.

Exactly Ray. And you can use the hidden F3 if you have a smoke generator, look for 60760 and F3 in the digital section of this forum. I placed a thin PCB strip on top of spring to the smoke gerator, that way separating it from headlight. Later on I changed the decoder to a Loksound MFX, there plenty of space in the tender.

Don't you get problems getting a good ground connection with tyres on all the drivers?

The ground connections are picked up from the front bogy and the tender 4 axles.
Today it would'nt be necessary to do this.

Very good, It is a heavy loco with large motor.

You may notice the black box in the cab.

Probably my favourite of all Märklin locos.

My father bought me one new for Christmas in 1964, and I still have it today. At that time the technology seemed incredible (especially when compared to what British manufacturers were producing then). All metal loco, 2-10-0 with flanges on all wheels, articulated all-wheel gear drive, working lights, working smoke, Telex uncoupling, huge pulling power. What an amazing model! I love it!

Best wishes,

Nigel

Hi Nigel
I have a catalog from 1964 and it says the 3074 was brand new model in that year.If the postal strike doesn't upset things then should
have it next week. Will let you know what condition the Loco is in.
Thanks
Ian
