Hi,
What soldering jigs do you use to hold your work?

I just did a bunch of soldering of wires to a decoder, plug and socket.

I used this tool with two adjustable alligator clips to hold the pieces in place while soldering. I would put the decoder in something protective, the wire in a tweezer, and then hold all that together in the alligator clips. It got tedious quickly. There's got to be a better way.

Thanks.

Looks like you have the same holder as I do. it works but is sometimes hard to get the wires at the correct angle
When I use my hands it takes about 2 glasses of wine or a few shots of vodka to keep my hands from shaking.wink

Nothing better than what you came up with!

They sell special jigs which look much like that, a set of clamps and clips on a stand designed to hold everything in place while the soldering takes place. In my previous job we used to call these tools a "third hand".

I often use adhesive tape to hold things in place.

I didn't want to admit it, but since you went first, I was working mine with 3 beers!

Tape is a good idea!

Yeah, it has a magnifying glass, but it keeps falling down. I have since moved one of the clips on the middle post were the glass goes.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yes that is the same clamp stand I use. Seems to be a universal one for modeling.

Nothing much wrong with those stands, but they can be fiddly to set up to hold things in the right place. Sometime all you want is a quick and dirty way of putting a bit of weight on an object or wire to stop it moving around - under those circumstances I make good use of ordinary spring loaded clothes pegs. Those pegs also have a couple of nice grooves in them, so one can (for example) put a 2 pin lamp into the groove while one solders wires onto them.

Ray already mentioned this. It is also known in Denmark as "the 3rd hand". Very useful. Mine also includes a magnifying glass.
