Hi,

I have a couple of HAMO loks. Both have some kind of "metal button" under the chassis, and I'd like to know what is it for.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Brakepad,

What you're refering to is probably what one could call a contact stud, it's a part of a system to trigger signals and turnouts by running over a contact track. This type of contact tracks is mainly used by Fleischmann, when the loco drives over the contact track, this stud connects to contacts.

Many thanks Sander. I'd like to convert both to 3-rail and I wonder if it should be removed or not (or if keeping it will be OK for running on 3-rail tracks).

Best regards.

Xavi

Hi Xavi,

You're welcome! Please remove it as it might cause shorts on turnouts.

How to remove it? Is it enough to "pull"? I would not like to break something, but I can't see any other way, it seems to have been inserted by pressing it.

Good question... In Fleischmann models, the contact stud is secured with a circlip inside the model. So, instead of pulling I would recommend opening the model and examining the inside.

Again on Fleischmann locos: there is a third part - a spring that pushes the contact stud downwards towards the track, this movement is limited by the clip mentioned by Sander. You need to remove the clip from the inside and hold on to the stud. Otherwise both parts might just "fly" away. [:0]

Hi all!

I managed to remove the "button", It has an C-clip which holds it in place, it's necessary to remove the axle which "hides" the C-clip in order to be able to remove it.

The model is a Hamo E52 lok, like this:

Actually it's ready to fit a UHL 76320 in, what makes me think that this will be the universal locomotive. With slider it can run on 3-rail layouts, analog or digital. Replace the slider with the 2-rail contact part and it will run on any 2-rail layout, analog or digital.

The Wonderlocomotive, at the end!

Best regards.

Xavi.
