IMG_1184.jpeg (2,615kb) downloaded 5 time(s). IMG_1184.jpeg (2,615kb) downloaded 5 time(s).Dear All

I have the Marklin 39970 Maintenance Locomotive. It now has an issue that the pantograph will not raise or lower when issuing the command on my ecos 50200. It used to work ok. After opening up the item I noticed that the piezo motor was working ok (turning clockwise and anticlockwise as if to raise and lower the pantograph). Looking at the underside of the model I can see that the fine nylon line was not broken that attaches to the pantograph. If I turned the black clutch assembly manually that attaches to the nylon wire I was able to raise and lower the pantograph to half height, but it refuses to raise to full height. The pantograph is not broken in any way (see pictures).

This is an old model that Marklin will not repair.IMG_1183.jpeg IMG_1184.jpeg (2,615kb) downloaded 5 time(s).

I look forward to your help on this issue IMG_1.jpeg (2,615kb) downloaded 6 time(s).

Many thanks

Andy

Hi Andy
I have this wonderful model.
Re the pantograph there is tiny nylon wire which forces down the panto or let it do up by the force of the panto's spring.
So, NEVER EVER pull the panto up

So what can you do/
Remove the casing BUT FIRST remove the rotating plateform.
This is done by pushing out a tiny piece of brown plastic (noted 3 on the view below) above the axle to access the scezw (noted 2 on the view below)

Once the rotating platform is removed you may pull up the casing. Sometimes it may be stuck a little do not exert force but find the way up
At this stage, on a fonctionning model, the pantograph should raise by itself.
If not, then the nylon wire is tangled up
On mine the nylon was hardened and needed replacing.

Alternately, if the panto goes up freely, then it is an issue with the piezo motor
The frame and electronics look like this

Of course you may test all 3 motors and the panto one framed in red
At each powerr up, the panto will cycle to locate its position

Cheers

Hi Jean

Thanks for your response on this. As mentioned when I remove the case the pantograph does not raise automatically. The only way I can raise the pantograph to half height is by turning the black clutch on the underside of the pantograph... see photo IMG_1.

I believe the issue is with the wire.... the piezo motor works fine.

How did you go about changing the wire.... it looks very tricky to me.

Thanks again

Andy

You must start by taking crisp pictures of the inside the casing where to nylon wire goes.
I am not near my 39970 unit so i only can tell from memory having replaced it once.

It all starts with a knot on a groved cylinder in the pantograph pick-up shoe (careful it gest lost easily)
then it goes on the loop of a spring (to keep tension but to absorb excessive force)
and last it goes on a tiny whinch that is held by one screw
It is absolute mandatory you use the same diameter of nylon wire.

You may want to look at this topic https://www.marklin-users.net/fo...agon---broken-Panto-cord

If the nylon string was broken I would think the pantograph would not go up at all assuming it is pulled up or would go all the way up if the string is designed to release it slowly and pull it down. It might be fishing leader. If it only goes up half way i would think the issue was the string being off the capstan or the spring being disconnected. The question is does the string keep the pantograph from going up and pull it down? I only have steamers but the only electric engine I am familiar with the pantograph is spring loaded so it goes up once it is released and has to be pushed down. If that is the case then something is preventing the string from being fully released. Observing the operation with the cover off, if feasible, would give the answer. Maybe.
