I'm trying to find out how to open the Plastic housing of the Marklin 6646 Transformer. Some of the the past discussions are abut 20 years old and have no specific info or photos. It appears they have a release from the bottom, but not sure and don't want to needless destroy the plastic case by guessing. Greatly appreciate any sound advice on getting this back in working order.

You open it the same way you would a 6021 (look at the 6021 repair thread for pictures).
There are four small white lugs that hold the case together, two on each side. You get a small drill bit and drill a small hole in each lug. Insert a small screw into each hole, tighten the screw up a bit but not all the way home. Use a pair of pliers to pull the screw with the attached lug out. The case should then come apart, but be careful of any attached wiring between pieces. Reinstallation is the reverse process.
The usual warnings about being carefull when working on mains voltage devices applies as normal. Any work done on one of these transformers is at your own risk.

Yes, like Bigdaddy nz says. Mine had a solder joint come loose for the power feed cord. Easy resolder fix. I used white car model kit or ho scale structure kits from Faller, etc. for the new hole plugs. Just cut off the excess from the exterior.

For some reason I never noticed the plugs on the side and was focused only on the bottom (like the older metal blue ones).

I removed the plugs using the method outlined above. However, when putting things back together, I used four 8-32 x 1/2 nylon screws purchased from a local hardware.

Great idea! If you need to open it again it will be easy to do and it looks good too. |
Regards,
Jim
I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time. |

I can just push the sprue pins inside the unit. They're short enough.

Do the nylon screws fit flush against the case? Only because if not, and you want to clip it next to another trafo, or a 6021 control unit using the clip slots on the bottom, the screws may not allow enough clearance. The model kit sprues look lie the factory plugs except where t the paper label has the new hole.

Just put the original plugs back in, it saves faffing around and you already have screw holes for the next time you need to undo the case.

I think mine broke and wouldn't fit back in. Maybe I drilled them out.
