Good afternoon. I just purchased a z scale mallet 88290 second hand and it runs great however none of the lights work in either direction. I took the shell off and I don’t see anything obvious that would be wrong. I’m open for suggestions on how to get it fixed. Thanks.

Hello. Hope all is well. That is a great locomotive. It is one of the best puller that I know. It will easily pull over twelve wagons, no problem. You should be very happy with it. Here is a user parts diagram which you should be able to download. https://static.maerklin....3e0838ab881434542541.pdfRemove the shell for a start. Carefully. This locomotive has some unique light modules in the front and rear. There is actually a module in the front where the two steam tanks are. A small wire connects this light to the power contact near the motor. Unless you see some damage in the tank location or the wire running to the side seems damaged I think it is safe to assume there is no issue with the front light connections. Concerning the rear module, just verify the module is present and not loose. If all seems okay check the back of the frame and you will see two copper prongs. They are not apparent in the parts diagram above. It is possible these are not making contact with the rear light module Use care to bend the two prongs outward from the frame just slightly. These prongs deliver the electricity to the module. Put the shell back on. With enough light you might be able see that the contacts are engaged by looking up inside the rear of the shell. Run your locomotive back and forward to confirm the lights are working. I noticed the front lights are not very bright. This might be normal. The lights are LEDs so it is not likely they are burned out but you never know. I don’t know if the light modules are available. Best wishes and take good care. Enjoy this locomotive, it is a good one. A good addition to your collection. Zme

Oh dear. I couldn't hold myself and bought a 88290. It wasn't even a very good deal, but I kinda love these mallets..

I know the feeling. I probably overpaid as well but it’s not bothering me since it’s such a unique locomotive.

Hello, hope all is well. Here is a 88290 which is for sale, but not in the UK. It is one from the record collection recognized by Guinness. It is not rated the highest (C7)and comes with no box or instructions. If you think you might be ok with this. https://www.trainz.com/c...;objectId=43896220975226I have not found a source for a replacement motor for this locomotive. Seems like it would be fairly easy to replace. I have had my ups and downs with this source, but they have been willing to provide a refund when it was appropriate. This is one of my favorites. Should you find one, I am certain you will like it too. Best wishes, hope your search is successful. Take good care. Zme

Thanks for the link Zme.
I did see this one but i would rather find a boxed one if possible, and the fact its so far away for returns etc worried me slightly.
Best,
Sandy.
