Marklin 39210 br e10 erratic load/speed compensation

Hi, this model is the early mfx with soft drive c sine motor and cardan shafts. It runs well with no load, or a few coaches, but I like towing my tee 6 car set with it. At a moderate speed it's ok, but above 60% it lags in grades, and speeds up too much on a downgrade. Has anyone changed the decoder macro's, or can it be improved? Has anyone changed the decoder to a newer mfx sound type? It looks like a 21 pin decoder by the manual parts schematic.

Are you asking about 39120?
39120 was announced before the Softdrive Sinus came out.
If you have an early 39120 without the "csin3" board, that could explain bad speed characteristics.
Anyway, for C Sine locos the load regulation in the decoder is disabled. Not much can be done to improve speed characteristics by means of decoder programming or decoder replacing. |

Yep Tom, I typod the number. Ok, thanks. Can you tell if the board is a csn3? Serial number is S6047997.

39120 was announced around 2006. SDS came around 2008.
Your serial number indicates a loco made in 2006. So it does not have SDS or CSIN3 unless it was sent to Märklin for an upgrade after 2008.
The 2006 mfx C-Sinus generation is known for bad speed characteristics and voltage sensitivity.
Maybe you can improve speed characteristics a little bit by adding more feeder wires at the uphill slopes.
I don't know if Märklin still accepts compact c-sine locos for free hardware upgrades. |

Thanks Tom! I'm not going to investigate the upgrade. I have plenty of motive power in my collection, including the nice br 103 in tee livery C sine short length without the double row side vents, older pantographs, and engine room lighting.
I'd rather change the decoder in my br 120 metal tee with the lame whistle and the old loksound decoder. Maybe another reason Marklin abandoned the Csine drives.

But the early driver boards for the mfx decoders were a mayor QA disaster and ruined the reputation of the C Sine motors for good. A brushless DC motor with ball bearings and really "maintenance free". |

Oh I agree Tom! My c sinus 103 runs great. So does my obb Taurus. I bought the 39120 in early 2007. I didn't run it much before the recession hit home, putting the hobby on hold for me. So while I was unemployed, I put most of my trains back in the boxes in storage. Brand new C track too. Ffwd.to 2020 I began again with a layout rebuild and expansion to discover the early C track was brittle and cracking. Nothing's ever perfect, us, and Marklin included.
