Four steam locomotives parallel running must be very, very rare sight these days.

Steamfest is an annual event at Maitland, New South Wales, Australia that includes a "train race" - really some parallel running.

Definitely an experience as they pass either side of you.

This year we had from left to right -
3801 4-6-2 from 1943
5917 2-8-2 from 1953
6029 4-8-4+4-8-4 articulated from 1954 quite a beast at 260 tons
R766 4-6-4 from 1952 and converted from 5'3" used in some parts of Australia to standard gauge.

Particularly nice to see 6029 in action again.

Apart from the steam trains at Steamfest there was a host of other things all about steam. I have included a few other photographs that I took over the weekend.

Also running at Steamfest were some vintage wooden CPH diesel railmotors. The oldest will turn 100 this year and it is amazing how many kilometres they still do on tours. My wife and I were members of the Rail Motor Society for a while and we did quite a few trips as carriage crew on these.

Here's a picture - but not from Steamfest.

Here's some video too. For those not in Australia, the Hunter Valley rail lines feed about 160 million tons of coal annually to the world's largest coal port at Newcastle.

Hi Mark and Michael.
Thanks for those great reminders of the Hunter Valley railway environment.
I and my brother spent many an enoyable hour or two in early 1965 taking photos of the trains between Sydney, Newcastle and Singleton.
We only got shouted at once, near a signal box at Homebush (a Sydney suburb).
Being from country Queensland where we took photos with impunity it came as a bit of a shock.
