Hello
I thought that in a thread I read that somebody had a list for paints that are readily available. I have several engines in different paint schemes that I’m wanting to convert to digital and at the same time would like to touch up the paint where needed. At the moment I’m converting 3074 BR 216 in I believe oceanic blue/beige? Paint scheme and need to touch up a few spots. I also had some rust on the buffers and couplers that I was able to get of (for the most part) with a dremel with a plastic bristle brush attachment. Are these parts painted? I would be thankful if someone has some info for a list of paints that Marklin used for its engines or point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Robert

Hi,

About DB colours here is a copy from wikipedia:

"The first locomotives were delivered in the usual 'crimson' (RAL 3004) of that time. In 1974 218 217 and 218 218 were used as test vehicles for new colour schemes : 218 218 was the first locomotive in the new ocean blue-beige (turquoise/cream) finish (RAL 5020/RAL 1001). 218 217 received an experimental livery in the TEE red and beige (RAL 1001/RAL 3004).

The turquoise/cream colour became a new standard for the 218, whilst the 218 217 in the burgundy and beige remained a loner, for almost thirty years, until 753 001 (ex 217 001) became the second locomotive from the V160 family to receive this colour scheme.

By the late 2000s the turquoise/cream colour had virtually disappeared, the last representative being DB AutoZug 218 320."

Here you can find RAL colour touch up paints https://ttn-shop.com/farben.php

To my eye those colour examples on their web page don't match reality so we have to tust on RAL numbering.

I hope that this helps you Smile

Cheers
Åke

You can't go by onscreen colours. Even if you have a perfectly calibrated screen with hardware device. A physical colour swatch, light is reflected off the surface, the opposite to a screen.

Thank you Ake and toosmall. Looked at your link and that will help. Is there a list for what RAL colors Marklin used on they’re engines and rolling stock?

Hi Robert,

I haven't found such list yet. Something about mixing Humbrol paints has been discussed earlier
in this string: https://www.marklin-users.net/fo...ss--satin--matte-or-flat

Thanks again Aka. Looks like I’m going to order a paint starter set with 72 colors from Vallejo and try to mix some colors. The next hobby shop is over 1 hour drive away and that seems the best value and variety. Have you tried the Vallejo paints? They seem to get good reviews over here.

Hi Robert,

I have tried Vallejo paints but only to plastic scale models.
With brush they seem to be challenging to use on bigger surfaces so it is better to use air bush.

Best regards
Åke

Thanks for the tip. I’m going to order a set to try and see if I have any luck mixing the paint to get the correct color.

Try some samples under different lighting. A colour can match under one colour temperature then look quite different under another.

Robert

I just finished restoring (repainting) an old V200 (M* 3021)
I took the cap to the body & paint shop of the dealership i work and our painter mixed me up a bit of the red and the grey(ish) blue base color..... perfect match to the original....

Check with your friendly local B&P shop if they are able / willing to do that. Use base color to get the same dull / satin gloss shine as the original.

Regards
Jean-Pierre
