Hello all,
I have an older analog locomotive that will not change direction. I have changed the spring. The main issue is that the slider, even when manually actuated, will not shift the rocker always. It won't electrically at all at this time but the loc runs in either direction. Thanks for any input.

Try a bit of dry carbon lube on the arm, or a light oil applied with a swab. Otherwise, the solenoid may be weak.

Hi Roman
I assume you have the standard , 2 position relay with a rocker from 1958 (or so) until digital age in late 80s
Basically once you have changed the spring, you have 2 points to check
1- the pin actuating the rocker is vertical
2- the articulation allowing the pin to come back to central position is moving freely.

Other points to check:
- the relay reacts normally to a 24 VAC pulse by moving all the way and then returning rapidly to its home position
- the contacts are not welded (never saw it though)

There are variants over the long production time:
- screw to adjust the spring tension / bended bar
- rotating part by an axle (which can seize because of dirt / corrosion) or as depicted here

Two metal plates (a spring is attached to one) must not be lubricated because they will stick to each other so the bottom will not move left and right!
Oxidized contacts can be cleaned with contact spray and very fine sandpaper.

Further to the comments I would suggest.

1) Take the whole R/U unit apart for cleaning.

2) with the two brass plates, I would not oil, any oil just gives a very slight drag, the whole idea to avoid.

However, rub the two plates where they contact on a bit of paper. Paper is a very fine abrasive and does not scratch. Any other abrasive will. The aim is to polish the plates to dead smooth shiny appearance.

3) The same with all the points, use paper to polish clean.

4) The selection pin also needs to be polished as well. I use a dremel stainless steel brush in the drill. Use the brush on the rocket contact areas of where the pin contacts.

The aim is to make all these contact areas dead smooth, it the corrosion over the years on these areas that slow the R/U up, nothing more. Never had a coil that was faulty.

This method always works, done and developed over many years.

Hello all,
It has been a while but I finally got to the locomotive today during some down time and an update. I had a similar locomotive to make sure of the reverse mechanism installed. The 3059 had an insert with a flange inside the brass spring under the rocker base binding the action. That is missing from the 3038 that I used for comparison. After removing it, cleaning as suggested, and reinstallation, it operates as new. I didn't open a 3165 to see if this was a later mod to stiffen the rocker tension spring but I will leave well enough alone.
