Having watched some railroad videos, I have noticed some diesel locomotives have a dented portion in the pilot that corresponds to the rail gauge. It would appear that at some point, the locomotive has dipped enough to permit the pilot to contact the rail. Is this possible? and if so, what would be the reason for it happening? I have noticed this on several locomotives.

Are you referring to prototype or models?

Prototype. It's hard to pin point as it shows up very quickly in the video. You may have only a second or two to notice it. Notice I posted this in the 87:1 forum.

Is there a link to the video?

I've tried viewing videos but can't seem to come across one that shows a dented pilot but will keep an eye open for when I do see one and will post.
