Good afternoon fellow enthusiasts.

I hope someone on the forum will be able to help me. I have a Marklin 33185 that has had a bit of a meltdown as a result of getting stuck under a catalogue that was left across the rails. The armature is seriously damaged and will need replacing. Can anyone advise me as to the correct armature for this locomotive. I have referred to the Marklin website but because this locomotive is no longer in production there is no parts list available and consequently I cannot find a part number for this locomotive. Can anyone help? The original armature/anker is a five pole with blue paint. I tried the armature from Marklin kit 60760 but the diameter of the shaft is too big for the bearing in the chassis block.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you,

John

As marklin has issued several of these types, any spare part armature for an S 3/6 br S10 will fit and have the correct gear on it. The field coil windings may also be damaged. There is at least one 3700 series, and at least one
3900 series model. Just do a bit of online searching. These also pair up with the DR Rheingold trains.
Another avenue is to upgrade it to full digital with a permant magnet high efficiency propulsion retrofit kit, and new decoder. Either one without, or with sound. The decoder, and speaker will mount in the tender. Also I would install new brushes. They all take the square type.

Thank you for your reply.

The locomotive already has a high efficiency motor installed and was running perfectly. The problem is trying to identify the correct replacement armature. The armature from Marklin conversion kit 60760 will not fit the bearings in the chassis. I will check the parts list of other variants of this locomotive in the hope that they will have the same armature.

John, chances also are that most of the passenger steam Locos. have the same size driving wheels, and just maybe also the same gearing. If that is so, then an armature gear which fit's those should fit. There are only a few different ones. The two types of motor designs for steam Locos. are canted forward, where as the magnet is tilted or not. I think the driving wheel size determines the size of the gear on the armature shaft. The larger gear shaft may have larger shaft bearings.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

The locomotive was already upgraded by a previous owner to a high efficiency motor but unfortunately I have no idea which conversion kit was used. I do have a Marklin 60760 conversion kit in my spares but as I said the armature shaft from that will not fit the bearing in the chassis. I do not want to buy another kit in the hope that it will fit. Does anyone know what conversion kit is recommended for the S 3/6 locomotives. At least if I knew that I could buy that kit.

I did borrow the armature from another locomotive that was also converted and it worked in the 33185 but again I do not know what kit was used in that conversion.

The strange thing about the 33185 is that the 60760 decoder that was fitted survived this episode but the armature had a meltdown.

John, you can buy only an armature, and this month's Marklin digital newsletter has an S3/6 being converted by Rick Sinclair. The photo shows the motor block being square onto the frame, not canted.
Search the Marklin.de spare parts website for the armature once you find a later S3/6 version's spare parts diagram in it's user manual pdf also on Marklin's site.
I bet Modellbahn shop Lippe, or Modellbahn Union both in Germany have them in stock, and can ship to you Fed-Ex, DHL, or UPS international superdaver in a few days. They cost about $25 U.S., so about 20 euros or so.
The Feb. 9th. Youtube digitalwebibnar will also cover converting two older models.

Sorry John, I did some searching, and Marklin no longer lsts part for your Loc. Nor is the 60030 5 pole armature, etc. made anymore. I did see a 60904 soversion set on E-bay for $33 U.S. in Antelope Valley, California. This is no longer made either. It comes with 2 different aramtures and motor block magnets to fit most ho locos.

Hello
originally delta 33185 has a DCM motor, so your 60760 should fit on it. Was your kit sealed? perhaps it has the wrong parts inside.
older versions prior to 1988 had a LFCM engine.
here you can find part numbers for all marklin 5 pole kits

If you are looking for just the motor parts for a DCM motor then the Marklin 60941 kit is the kit you want.

The motor parts in the 60760 kit are the same as those in 60941.

You might end up with a spare magnet and brush plate if you use just the armature. There is a list of part numbers for the individual items in a sticky threads at the top of the list of thread in the Digital forum - it's called Parts for Motor Conversion Kits or something like that. All the individual part numbers for each of the 3 motor kits are listed there.
