So...finally tested out my newer transfo after trying to go faster with this old. loco from early 70s, it first only ran backwards and then stopped moving altogether. Is this a loose/broken spring issue?

It stopped moving you said. Is there anything it does do? What do you mean 'go faster'?

For starters, make sure the loco mechanics are cleaned up, and the brushes are still in good enough shape to be used. If you would remove the motor, the wheels should be able to spin freely without too much friction. The collector, touching the brushes, should be clean enough to give contact, and their should not be too much gunk from the brushes to avoid shorts.

If it doesnt move, but lights are on and it is buzzing, it could indeed be a spring tension issue on the reversing mechanism. (not enough tension)

If it is entirely dead, it could also be a bad contact contact on the reversing mechanism. So try to 'exercise' that manually and see whether it comes alive again.

Not running in one direction could also mean a broken wire, either a soldering somewhere near the reversion mechanism, but possible also near the field coil. Make sure to investigate properly as such wirecracks are difficult to spot.

Ok thanks. It stopped moving. I don't even know how to lift the cover of the locomotive to get to the innards. Are there pins or screws ?

I tried to run it at full speed on a 30VA trsnsfo and it just died. Only thing it does know is to make some noise but it doesn't move in either direction.

The 3000 has a little screw on top in the middle in one of the domes. Unscrew it and the body should come off.

Sounds like it needs oiling.

Bert and Alan have said it all ! Do some investigation and clean-out the gunk. You should be just fine ! Good luck !

Cheers,

Yes, you will find the Marklin Service Manual very useful in your situation.

Marklin 0733 Service Manual Vers B.pdf (11,534kb) downloaded 173 time(s).

This Youtube video may also be of use
