Hi All

I am thinking of buying a second hand 3496 loco with a Delta chip.
And gauge as to how difficult it is to convert this to a digital chip?

Does anyone know if it needs 2 chips? or two drive motors?

It doesn't have two of either. The valve grear is the only double drive off the motor. You need a 5 pole anker (armature), permanet magent, and a new decoder. You can either equip it for mfx, or std. MM digital with or without sound.

Hi
I have converted a 3796 (DB's BR 96) with a mSD3 (sound decoder).
Because of the very limited space in the loco, I recommend to use a cabled decoder (not one with a platine and 21 pin connector.
You have 2 solutions:
  1. one is to convert the loco with a decoder for universal motors 60906 (cable version)
  2. the other in to change your motor for a five poles motor 60901. Please check that your existing motor in a drum one (brushes pushing on a drum collector). Then to use a 60982 (mLD3 cable version).

The second solution is more expensive but the results are far better (slow speed, smooth acceleration.
Installing sound is a bit more complicated (more wiring + loudspeaker installation and requires a mSD3 sound decoder cable version 60985
Here is a picture of my BR96 before installation
