Hello,

My first time here. I've had Marklin trains since I was about 10 and am currently working on a 1950s layout with my two young sons. Yesterday I noticed a lighted Marklin sign in the window of a local thrift store. When I went into the store I also noticed the other items that all appear as though they may have been part of a retail display for Marklin trains. Any thoughts? I'm especially interested in the large sign which is over 10 feet long and over 12 inches tall. Do these look authentic to you? They definitely were professionally made if they weren't official Marklin issue. I haven't purchased them, the large sign is far too large for my collection. I might put them on Ebay to fund my train habit! Thank you for your input!

I have the first of the signals (third picture). It comes apart about half way down the mast, which is made from square section plastic downpipe normally used for guttering. Mine was used in a store somewhere around London.

I believe both the signals are made by Marklin, and were available for stores to purchase as advertising aids.

I use mine at our local train show. It takes something like 20 seconds for the arm to cycle from red to green, and another 20 seconds to cycle back.

I believe I know where there is one of the distance signals as per the last photo.

Buy the lot and buy them quick........... these things only drop in your lap once in a lifetime......... you WILL regret it for the rest of your life if you don't.

Absolutely agree with the sentiment expressed by others.

Buy them and take them home.
Afterwards you can work out what to do with them.
They look original and would certainly be an impressive display.

Bryan,

Like others have said, those are (relatively) priceless - seriously. The German collectors pay big money for some of those items.

If I were a millionaire, I would have already booked a flight to Wisconsin and be scouring for the shop as we speak.

If they are in the thrift store you know the price will be reasonable. Go, now and buy them all, you will have no trouble re-selling those you don't want, but please, if I may be so cheeky offer them here first because many of us love that sort of thing and you'll get a fair price. Even if you put them on ebay with a crazy reserve just to test the market.

My favourite is the orange signal sign, and perhaps the clock next to it (is that Marklin also) - my wife is mad on clocks and this would be an easy sell to her BigGrin

Also, get talking to the store staff, try as best you can to find the provenance of these items, if they can tell you where they came from, to match them with a particular store is a wonderful piece of history and... you just never know, that person may have other items they'd like to let go. One man's junk and all that. Amazing that they ended up forlorn in a thrift shop, even they would appear not to know their significance.

Having already publicised it here, you better be quick because I know I'd be in for sure. For all we know you might not get back there for a week and then any chump could snap them up.

What're you mucking around reading this for? - go, buy, everything, and ask if there's anything ese!! And post some pics when you've got them home, we are all very envious Cool Cool

Remarkable co-incidence that I just posted an update message on a very similar topic earlier this evening.....

Crikey buy the lot even if you have to get a bank loan & also try to find out more about their original place in what shop etc , Even a contact name & make further enquires as to what locomotives ,wagons etc may still be on offer . To put it in plain language , if you pass this lot up you would be a proper fool . I would be in the same boots as cookee & hop on a flight immediately if I could convince the FD that this was a life or death trip . I had the chance in Zermatt Ch to purchase a outdoor awning sign from a shop opposite the station . They had a exhibition of HAG along with a few "M" items in side the store which mainly sold tourist junk, I asked why so little "M" & was told they were disposing of all their "M"to concentrate on HAG , I gave it a thought or 2 if I should make a offer on what was left [4 ELoks & some carriages & wagons ] & then mentioned it to the Fd who then said '" none thing to lose ,go ahead but don't go overboard ". I made my offer & the manager said they would have to consult the owner who lived in China & would hopefully have a answer overnight. The next day I went down & they told me the offer was accepted & started cleaning out the cabinet , as a bit of a joke I asked about the outside awning sign & they said yes to it also . I had to say no as I had no way to get it back to Australia in 1 piece as it was a Perspex sheet which couldn't be folded & was about 2 meters long . I have been kicking my self ever since for knocking it back .

Take the lot at any price & then decide on what you don't want but I bet you will eventually keep the whole lot .

Cheers Tom in Oz .

They are desirable items, but if you sell them on eBay, the shipping fees could be high and put off any buyers, or cut into the profits you are hoping to gain. Beginning with 2015, UPS not only requires the weight of the package, but also all three dimensions and adds a surcharge based on size and weight. It is getting expensive to ship stuff, especially large items.

Just want to bump this back up top . I am very curious as to what the final outcome was regarding these advertising items from Marklin ? I hope we didn't scare Bryan off with all our comments that he should rush out & buy them at any cost . Looking forward to hearing what the conclusion was .

Hello all,

My apologies for being absent the past several days....busy week of work. I also must not have my forum settings quite correct because I was not getting alerts to all of your posts. I just returned from the thrift shop with all of the items loaded in my vehicle (including the Marklin clock with I did not originally include in my post). I negotiated a price that I consider to be quite reasonable. I do plan on selling most of the items (I may choose to keep the smaller lighted sign). As I mentioned previously I've got designs to build a 1950s Marklin layout out of mostly NOS materials and any extra funds would be most helpful. I have a relatively small area for my hobby so most of these items just wouldn't work for me. I appreciate everyone's comments on EBAY and shipping. I still may use this mechanism and if I do I will provide a heads up to this group with listing information. The only item that I would not be willing to ship is the large lighted sign unless someone wants it so badly that they would pay the shipping. I'm most likely to sell this item on EBAY but require local pickup (or I'd be willing to drive several hundred miles to meet someone part way). If you have additional feedback please continue to provide it. I really appreciate it. Not all of the items are perfect, but due to their rarity I still think they will display very well.

Bryan- I know where your signs came from :) Email me for the details, but I can give you the history on these, and how they likely wound up in a thrift shop in Wisconsin LOL Flapper

I didn't have the space or motivation to ship or I'd have bought them myself!

Bryan , Please advise on this forum what & when you wish to sell these items to the members who may be interested , Apart from being in Australia & almost fainting when I would see the cost of shipping I would be right in there to pick up a item or 3 . Thanks for getting back to the forum & putting this to bed ,You are a very very lucky man to come across something like this for sale . I also would be curious as to the history of them also .

Good score Bryan,

A better option than eBay especially if you are prepared to wait several months may be a specialist "Toy and or Train Auction".

I am sure that somewhere in the states they do occur on a regular basis. Perhaps even a Model/Train expo's would be a good avenue.

Anyhoo, glad you got them and all the best.

Hi Tom,

I regularly have fainting spells at the Post Office.

Despite Australia Post doing so well from the parcel business courtesy of internet and eBay sales, it continues to be one of the world's most expensive international post systems !

Hi Bryan,

Good to hear that you made progress on them. Take a look at the options bottom left side of this message you should see an option "Watch this topic and receive notifications of any activity via e-mail" - the default is actually for it to be on if you are the topic creator but any respondees need to select it so it is possible that there is a notification glitch in your settings, or possibly your ISP or email client is marking them as junk?

The forum software has a sometimes annoying habit of sending multiple messages for the same update, many of us are affected but it seems not everybody but if you email junk settings detect multiple instances of the same message that may enough to trigger a flag.

And of course, once you've got them home and setup, some photos would be awesome ThumpUp ThumpUp

Good score, we are all very envious

In between the outer suburb of NZ that we have at Bondi [ one of the most over rated beaches in Oz ] we also have all those other flyins from F1J1 , Samoan islands & New Guinea ' who have set up camp in the eastern suburb of Bondi .

Try and find a map of NZ with an 'East Island' notation (unless it's something you made yourself!)

Agreed - poor Bryan will think we're all a bunch of loonies here.

Of course he can continue to think that about our neighbours who get too much sun each day but us Kiwi's have a reputation to uphold!!

And when he replies, he will see, in the bottom left corner, the option to receive notifications, just like I said.

Now can we get back to being off-topic, much more fun than sticking to the subject Laugh Laugh

Have to agree that we loonies from down under may have gone way off topic , we should be thinking more about the wonderful find that Bryan found in a thrift shop & hopefully obtained the whole box & dice for a decent price . The Fd & my self are now off to the sons place for his fortieth birthday & probably count some sheep on the way during a 4 hour drive . Will be back early next week .

I don't think we will here back. Not to sound cynical but we chatted via email, and sounded like someone just trying to make a buck...

The signs came from a friends estate. There is a thread from the early phases of layout building (I built his layout), but I was searching and had a hard time finding it. from 2005 or 2006

I'd be happy just finding one or two vintage old style Marklin "Aufsteller" small metal tent signs to put on my train shelves. Apparently they're in demand in Germany and everyone's keeping theirs.

[img][img]Hello everyone,

I apologize for being absent for some time. Some of you may have been wondering what the status of the Marklin signs I posted about in January. It's been very cold in Wisconsin up until the last couple of days so packing signs in boxes in the garage really didn't look too appetizing.

I've seen some comments that I'm probably just out to make money on these signs and to a point they are correct. I've been a Marklin collector since I was about 10 years old and I'd like to instill that same love into my little boys. To do so I occasionally buy and sell items to help fund my antique toy/train habit. I've picked out a 1950s layout I want to build and that is going to take some cash. I also have a limited area for my hobby so these items just don't fit in my basement. In fact the semaphore is too tall to even stand up in my basement!

With that said I've just list all five items on Ebay several minutes ago. I really wanted to save these items from the thrift shop and get them back in the hands of collectors. I've made several of the items available so that the overseas buyers will have an opportunity if you choose to take on the shipping charges. The largest Marklin sign and the semaphore are available only for local pickup. I was really concerned they might not make the transit overseas or even cross country.

If you have questions please let me know. I know several of you have reached out to me and this seemed to be the fairest way to give anyone who wanted a chance to put these in their collection to do so. We are also planning on the arrival of a third child in mid-April and my wife made it clear that she didn't want a semaphore and clock in the kitchen when the baby arrived!

I do appreciate the help of those on this forum, I will be back soon when I start getting my layout put together this Fall.

Bryan

I'd post the Ebay auction numbers if I could remember how to post a photo!

Hi Bryan,

Thanks heaps for the update, I was one of many I'm sure wondering how you were getting on. I had a suspicion you'd be getting back to us once you had things sorted and I think you've done the right thing by listing them, it ensures a fair outcome for all.

I now have them all on my watchlist, first bid placed for the clock which I emailed you about but realistically when I factor in the potential shipping cost to NZ it may well put it right out of my reach anyway compared to domestic shipping within the US. But it's one item I'd have no trouble getting past the financial director, she's mad on clocks!! (this may not be quite what she has in mind but that's another story)

Either way good luck with them all, one way or another they will go to good homes and hopefully at least a few will end up with forum members.

This will be watched with interest I'm sure, very rarely does such an assortment of unique items come up, and I would not be surprised to see a retailer or two enter the fray.

Cheers

good luck on the sale brother! happy-wife, happy-life. i guess they have to set boundaries from time to time. i once started to build a 4 foot high, 7 foot long mountain on the kitchen floor late one Friday night. by Saturday morning she "made it clear" that this was not a good idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the mountain wound up in the garbage and we lived happily ever after. oh well...at least she never told me to use potpouri or bubblegum scented smoke fluid in my steamers! mike.
I love the smell of smoke fluid in the morning .

Hi Bryan,
The easy way is just to copy and paste the url for the listings in a post on here, but no matter most of us that are interested will know to type your auction numbers in ebay search, and that finds them

Good luck ThumpUp

As at the time of posting (NZ 8:30am, Sweden 8:30pm)...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/...ising-Sign-/161632370465 - currently at $US17.00, 4 bids
http://www.ebay.com/itm/...sing-Clock-/161632377558 - currently at $US51.00, 6 bids
http://www.ebay.com/itm/...ted-Signal-/161632387654 - currently at $US1.00, 2 bids
http://www.ebay.com/itm/...-Semaphore-/161632399094 - currently at $US1.00, 0 bids
http://www.ebay.com/itm/...ghted-Sign-/161632405139 - currently at $US1.00, 0 bids

I wonder if these shipping estimates reflect the actual likely shipping costs?, I suspect this is the ebay calculator and nowhere near what the shipping is likely to be but may account for the initial low interest especially in the bigger items. I wonder if it is worth Bryan actually talking to a helpful shipper and take one of the medium examples, say the Semaphore signal, and get an actual quote to ship to say Europe (at least Germany), UK & Australia/NZ.

I was interested in the clock, but over $US300 just for shipping?? phew - I'd rather find an ex-pat who is returning home and rent a corner of their shipping container for a fraction of that. And I'm sure there are companies who organise freight on that very basis. They set aside a container to a destination, and provided you are not in a hurry for an item they will include it and just wait until it's full or reaches a cost-effective volume where the cost is shared evenly. ie if you take 20% of the container, you pay 20% of the cost.

Cheers

Steve

Or you could use the NZ Post 'Youshop' service which allows you to have the goods sent to a US address, where the NZ Post folks repackage the items and send them on to NZ. Good to use where a seller doesn't want to send parcels overseas.

Nah.. I was the mad Kiwis at a Karaoke bar in town signing that Peter Allen song, "I Still Call Australia Home" that reminded me.. LOL

I am reminded of this statistic:

"Compared with the other contributor countries of migrants, New Zealand has a relatively small population, with an estimated 3.0 million NZ-born people living in New Zealand in 2006. (Endnote 1) This means that for every 100 New Zealanders in New Zealand in 2006 there were 15 NZ-born people living in Australia." See http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4102.0Main+Features50Sep+2010 15% of NZ lives in Australia. Laugh

Hmm, I wonder how many are living in the UK ... Confused

They reckon that the upcoming election all the non-UK born people (1.5 million) are enough to swing the election one way or the other ...

happy to be one of them ... Laugh

Update Friday morning (NZ time)

161632370465 - Vintage Marklin Retail Store Lighted Advertising Sign - currently at $US636.58, 18 bids
161632377558 - Vintage Marklin Retail Store Advertising Clock - currently at $US425.00, 11 bids
161632387654 - Vintage Marklin Retail Store Advertising Lighted Signal - currently at $US168.08, 8 bids
161632399094 - Vintage Marklin Retail Store Advertising Lighted Semaphore - currently at $US1.00, 0 bids
161632405139 - Vintage Marklin Retail Store Advertising Double Sided Lighted Sign - currently at $US1.00, 0 bids

Interesting there is no movement on the last two, which also are the ones with no shipping option. They do not even appear in my normal search and even though saved to my watchlist, only come up if I specifically search the item. Wonder how many non-US bidders are in this?

Rule me out Cookeee , as much as I would have liked to buy those items , the freight cost would have been more than what they were worth to get them to the great down under land called Oz .

Cheers Tom in Oz .

This is an old topic but I recently received some material which accurately identifies some of those items...

The Semaphore Signal is likely 19345

Distant signal is likely 19434

The red illuminated sign most likely 19428 (without German text)

From the 1982 Sales Promotion catalogue
