New to model railroading and have come across the term "HAMO" a number of times but have not been able to figure out what exactly it is. Could someone give me an explanation please?

HAMO is a former MRR manufacturer.
There is a German page in Wikipedia:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamo

Hammo was later all Marklin for d.c. 2 rail. After they aquired Trix, the Hammo name was retired.

Yes, but that only true from the late 60's onward. In the mid 60's HAMO did limited runs of Märklin items that were not available in the current line. I had a 3023 E18 from 1965 that was 3 rail AC. The box was identical to the light blue boxes that Märklin was using at that time but the lettering was HAMO.
