Hallo ,
I have a question to Swiss SBB gurus on our forum.
When SBB introduced for the first time EAOS wagons and also when gray painted wagons phased out brown ones.
I am aware of gray colored wagons in Epoch II but when that color was implemented after ww2.
( for instance on DB network EAOS wagon was introduced in 1978 or so in brown what about SBB ? BLS were mostly brown )
Can you guys help ?
Regards,
Marklineisenbahn

No, I am happy to pass the question on. Wink I only know that the first Eaos in pink/heather violet color appeared in February 1986 and that the gray units probably came a bit earlier.

I don't recall seeing the Eaos type car when I lived in Switzerland (1971/72). I seem to recall seeing a model of an Eaos in the Liliput catalog around 1978 or so.
I know that the ones delivered to the SBB were originally painted in a gray livery and had the new SBB logo <+> (Pleitegeier) at the top right corner of each side.

Like the famous "Eurofima" VSE coach, the Eaos was developed for the DB, but was offered to a number of European railways starting in the mid-1970s. I believe this included most of the national railways in Western Europe.

As Stefan posted, the "rosarot" (pink/violet) color was introduced in 1986. I think that the SBB embarked on a program to give different car types different colors. I don't remember what all the colors were, but the pink Eaos and Eanos, the yellow hoppers and turquoise steel coil cars all appeared as HO models.

At some point, a number of these cars and/or cars acquired or leased from other railways appeared on the SBB network painted in brown and other colors.
It is likely that a number of the SBB cars lost their pink livery over the years. I would presume that most were repainted in the normal gray livery. The repainted cars had a black panel with a small <+> SBB CFF FFS logo on the top left of the panel and the car's UIC Number beneath it.

Here are some diagrams from Bruno Lämmli's website www.lokifahrer.ch
https://www.lokifahrer.ch/images/Wagen/Eanos.gif
https://www.lokifahrer.ch/images/Wagen/Uacs.gif
https://www.lokifahrer.ch/images/Wagen/Shimmns.gif

From what I remember about my time in CH in 71/72, most freight cars were brown, passenger coaches were green as were the locos.
Private railways had different colors as they had opted to get away from the standard livery norms earlier than the SBB. Most freight cars were still the standard brown up to then.

At some point, the SNCF had introduced their own version (Eas) and the Germans introduced a variant (Eanos). The SBB also acquired a number of Eanos and SBB Cargo has adapted some Eaos to a format closer to the SNCF Eas which are now type Fas (See Maerklin 46912).

The SBB Cargo website has some info, but not year of introduction or liveries:

Hallo Everyone,
Thank you both of you gentlemen for help and quick reply. Truly appreciated here.
In that case it is safe to say that when one is modeling SBB Epoch III , one would be alowed to mix-match brown boxcars with gray Eaos gondolas let’s just say behind legendary Krokodil.
And that type of consist would be truly proper/ prototypical. Am I correct?
On few occasions I have seen pics of one or two steel frame coaches right behind engine as well. [So again passenger mix with cargo? ]

I understand that on provided photograph that is shunting locomotive ( single pantograph Krokodil ) but as usual I will wait for confirmation from SBB specialists on this forum.

Well, epoch/era III in Switzerland is considered to reach until about 1970. That's just about the time when Europe-wide UIC numbering began, but it seems a bit early for a gray Eaos in my opinion.

That's an interesting consist on your photograph: A shunting crocodile heading a "GmP" (Güterzug mit Personenbeförderung, sort of a freight train with a passenger car included). I assume that the rather uncommon heavyweight steel passenger car with open platforms was used as a "guard's van"/caboose in this particular case. Shunting crocodiles in normal freight service were not too common because these locomotives were normally needed in the large freight yards with humps.

The Eaos would have gone into service after 1976 (at the earliest). Some reports suggest 1978. It is possible that they might have seen limited use with the few Krokodils still in service at that point, but normally it would be more common to see those cars with Ae 6/6, Re 4/4II/III, Re 6/6 or Bm 4/4.

For the Krokodil, you could use a mix of older SBB cars, but my preferred would be either a unit train of gravel cars (Weiacher Kies 46331 or similar) or a mix of SBB, DB and FS cars which could be commonly found on the north-south transversal routes.

Hallo
Again thank you for your input gentlemen.
Since we are talking about SBB Eaos freight wagons, I still have one more question for you -please let us know when SBB phased Sputniks out of its service.
Sincerely,
Märklineisenbahn

One can say in the year 1992. However, a few units remained in use for different purposes (for instance static cabins for the staff in marshalling yards, "observation vehicles" on museum/tourist railways, etc.).
