I noticed that the little piece of foam used to hold oil (on the gear side shaft of the commutator) has turned to mush on my 3005. I gave everything a nice cleaning and she is running great but I need to replace that piece of foam. Is there a DIY solution? Does Marklin still sell this part? I checked the web site but no luck.

You could try Ritter Restaurationen and maybe APC-Adams in Germany or Eckert Engineering (USA). The part is likely a standard part that would have been used on multiple locomotive models.

I wouldnt complicate things, just stuff ANYthing into the hole; A bit of a shower-sponge, a snip-off of an old cloth, cotton, etc... It´s just to abosrb a bit of oil, and keep the axle and bearing lubricated over longer time. (anything that doesnt get disolved by the oil)

Hi Ken,Smile

In the past this has been discussed on the forum ThumpUp and we have been informed that the tiny sponge is available as part number 600660, if you want to buy the replacement part rather than the many good improvisations also described on the forum.

I confirm these sponges are available, and I have ordered them recently.

I ended up using a piece of cloth from a flannel sheet. Works great!

Just make sure there isn't to much pressure place onto the shaft., whereas a sponge gives and takes.
