Weather on the Scottish east coast was very bad last night with thunder storms. Problem with a lot of track is being laid too near to the sides of hills etc. Trees also cause problems. Hopefully will not be as bad as thought by the media.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Unfortunately it is bad news.
BBC news reports that three are dead, including the driver, and a number of other serious injuries. It seems the train may have hit a slip, and the first coach appears to have slid down a bank and caught fire.

It did look like fire damage from the photos, but what would cause a coach to catch fire?

If it is a DMU then there would be an engine and fuel tank ... even diesel fuel will catch fire under the right circumstances.

It’s a HST set, very sad.

I'm surprised with the derailment, I saw a TV series about Scottish rail and they had an engineering team controlling and surveying rail tracks for land slides and other obstacles.

Yeah, but there had been warnings of the possibility of slips on this stretch, and there has been buckets of rain over the last few days.

Given the seeming erosion at the bridge end, and the apparently large amount of silt/soil deposited over the ties and tracks in that crash area, it does seem like a landslide at that location is what the train collided with.

Preliminary report from the Rail Accident Investigation Board as reported by the BBC.
Seems the train was travelling within speed limits at the time, but it does give a description of the order of events as the accident happened.
