As google maps sucks as a an atlas and doesn't provide the names of mountain ranges, I cant say what its called from the Czech side of the border, but the accident happened in the single track area that goes over a mountain pass between the Republic and Germany as the two passenger trains heading in opposite directions were improperly on the same single track. They should have met in an adjacent train station, so clearly one train was released improperly with the other still on the run.

Access to the wounded and 2 killed was difficult due to the remote mountain pass terrain where the track snakes it way across the mountains.

According to 20min.ch, the accident occurred in what they described as the Erzgebirgskamm (Ore Mountain Ridge) near the Czech/German border in the West Bohemian Karlsbad region between Pernink and Novy Hamry, about 10km away from the German border. The line goes from Johanngeorgenstadt in Germany to Karlsbad. The two trains were on the same route, heading in the opposite direction. They were supposed to cross at a station, but one train seems to have passed that station without waiting.

A very nice route between Karlovy Vary and Johanngeorgenstadt.

The accident happened between Pernink and Nové Hamry, a long and winding track. But nobody describes the exact location. Must be near Pernink, because they started the rescue from Pernink.

They had to carry and lead the wounded down the track to the nearest station as it was described so access to the track is likely easiest by way of the track. A mountain rescue would be needlessly complex and slow.

After having searched for a map or atlas application or website that displayed mountain ranges and not the clutter of roads and town names or points of interest I game up on the “web” and resorted to the good old printed world atlas I have.

Near as I can tell the mountain range is called the “Krušné hory” on the Czech side. A major part of the Saxon highlands region ( yeah it’s the Erzgebirge on the German side but the place isn’t in Germany. ).

Dead tree edition for the win.

For the record, Krušné hory means Ore Mountains in Czech. Ore Mountains in German is Erzgebirge.

"A difference which makes no difference is no difference."

For the record, the collision occurred a few hundred metres to the southeast of the Pernink station. Rescuers had to cross a bridge and head into a wooded sector to reach the accident site.

surely the logical thing would be to access the site via rail?
yes, there are already 2 train in the block, but the fact that is already the case means two more cold approach from the two sides.
Assuming of course that more vehicles are available.....

Interesting that just two towns away from Pernink is a town called "Merklin", close but no tomato
