I purchased the 6-wheel Umbauwagen sets from 2017 (43173, 43183, 43184, 43193) that came with interior lighting, and I installed a pickup shoe (73405, then 73406) to one of the carriages, however whenever it went over a turnout the car would derail as the shoe was hitting the centre axle and pushing the car up and off the rails.

Has anyone who has experienced this problem come up with a solution - the solution is installing a shorter shoe, but I can't seem to find one out there.

Also, I have some older Trix and Fleischmann wagons that don't have NEM sockets which is stopping me from installing lighting (and current couplers) into the carriages, does anyone know a product out there where one can attach an NEM socket to a carriage?

The pickup shoes you tried are not for these coaches. You should find the right one.

Those centre axles can be a pain in the ass. I have removed quite a few and you cant really tell they are missing.

Do you know what the correct one for these coaches is?

I thought about doing that or removing the axle but keep the wheels, but it'd rather not if at all possible

You should try to find the pickup shoe of the 7317 lighting kit which is for 3-axle cars.

Hi Alister Ian
Checking on Märklin website, it shows that no slider for this type is available but ground-return springs (E444950) are available and using regular contact conducting couplers you may light-up the set using an additional car on which a Märklin sliders can be adapted
Note: it is possible you have to wire the contact conducting couplers as the "Deichsel" may have no inside contact blade. Wiring is very feasible using thin and flexible wire.
Cheers
Jean

Some years ago I was fortunate enough to find and buy 7317 lighting kits for all the 6-axle wagons that I have. Now you must be really lucky to find one.

I thought I was the only one that did this. I have a long train of the older style six wheelers #4004. Not only do they run better without the center wheels, the drag on the lok is greatly reduced particularly when taking a long train around a reversing loop. An added bonus is more room for a longer pickup shoe. The #7074 which is the correct shoe for these wagons can be quite troublesome.

I have even removed them from my 48711, 48715 type wagons as the centre wheels were rubbing on the chassis causing excessive drag.

Alistair, even if you remove the middle axle from one wagon, you could put a decent pickup shoe under it. I have been looking into less expensive ways of adding current conducting couplers to my close coupled wagons. Piedemont ways seemed about the best.
