After almost a year since I acquired my Marklin 29400 starter set, I still don't have a permanent layout. Nevertheless I have a track plan and have started work on various buildings. The latest is a kit bash of the Vollmer #43697 Drinks Distributor to a Gasthof. In a fit of vanity I have named it "der Bogenshutze", a pun on my surname, "Bowman" (or archer). I still have some painting to do (the roof tiles will be more orange) and I need a biergarten complete with tables and drinkers served by a waitress dressed in dirndl dress. What the kit would have looked like if assembled out of the box. I didn't think the single storey storeroom was appropriate for an inn. |

I'm sure that the storeroom will come in useful somewhere else on the layout.

It could be they sold their own beer and distributed it you could have beer delivery trucks there. In front of mine of have a wedding party which reminds me years ago when my cousin in a small town (Trebur) was married and I was there.

Hi, That is an interesting building. Thanks for sharing. A similar use building is also available from Auhagen. Auhagen 11354Kimball |

Hello Keith, Your building looks great - just the place for a lovely biergarten out the back . I also saw the requirement for a biergarten on my layout. Unfortunately (we were operating at the time as a franchise of "München Biergartenen") our business could not afford (despite being subsidised by Frankfurter Allgemeine) the rent of any of the surrounding prestigious historical properties on the Kunststoffstrasse in the Altestadt above the station (see fourth image) but we were lucky enough to come by this space leased from the DB: Set above the main lines: Looking down upon the Hauptbahnhof and Hauptbahnhofstrasse: and with a nice view back up along the main line straights whilst waiting approximate to your train's departure for the reisende of Altbach: Due to the efficiency of the Preiserling workers in Atlbach we are kept in good supply of the amber fluid healthfood received continuously from the goods depot siding : I would however respectfully offer one word of caution for your consideration in regard to placing a biergarten on your layout - the Preiserlings are renown drinkers (they tend to get a plasticful !) and unfortunately our proximity to the station and the tight bend at the bottom of the street descending to Hauptbahnhofstrasse has resulted in a few calamitous incidents : At our biergarten it has become known locally as "Donner und Blitzen corner": Have fun with your trains (but keep an eye on those intoxicated Preiserlings!) Regards, PJ

Great photos of your layout, PJ. You've certainly captured a lot of animation in your biergarten and given me a lot of ideas. The shot of the Fosters beer wagon reminded me of the advert on British TV featuring the Australian comedian, Paul Hogan. When asked by a fellow traveler on a London Underground railway station platform what was the best way to Cockfosters, he replied, "Drink it warm I reckon". It's just over a year since I started this kit-bash project (Post #1 above) and, after a long pause waiting for some items to come back into stock in the UK, I thought I'd post an update. I still don't have a permanent layout so the Gasthof zum Bogenshütze is a stand alone diorama. I've really enjoyed creating it and I still have some details to add including tables, chairs, parasols and diners on the pavement in front of the biergarten. I'm adding a new barmaid to the biergarten of the Gasthof zum Bogenschütze to cope with all the extra drinkers. Not happy with the figure as supplied in the Preiser pack 10700 "In the Beer Garden" so I repainted her in a green and black dirndl dress. Inspired by Ian M's "Ercalbahn", I will be giving all my preiserlings names. This lady will be Helga. The first barmaid (see photo 2 in post #8 above) is from Noch and was already in a red and black dirndl with 3 foaming steins in each hand. Noch names her "Freya, the waitress figure". Left is as supplied. Right is as repainted. HO scale. Edited by user 28 May 2022 08:36:33(UTC)

Hello Keith (or should I say Hallo Herr Bogenschütze), That is certainly a delightful building and yard, with multiple levels. Did you have to modify the kit to achieve that? Edit: Sorry I did not re-read the foregoing introduction, you have achieved a very clever kit-bash. My daughter runs a Gasthof in Germany. Her prior place was a bit like your model. Very realistic. regards Kimball Edited by user 02 June 2022 12:37:05(UTC)

I usually brush dirty white spirit over the hair and faces of figures. It settles in all the hollows and in my opinion makes the figures look more lifelike. |

Great work and narrative PJ and Bogenschütze! ...the figures and tables look great however my one thought for all their swagger and excess, where are all the extra beer glasses and dishes on the tables? They look so perfectly clean. Did they import a Tasmanian devil to eat all the left overs and old beer steins? I wonder if some thin clear piping cut for extra drinking cups and small round bits of plastic or paper would make for plates of food. Just a thought. I did notice a few glasses on the table at Gasthof der Bogenschütze. I would contact them to see who their supplier, manufacturer (or DIYer) might be. btw ...I like the way you have the hills rising behind the half buildings. I am trying to think of ideas for my shelf layout extension into the hallway. I recently bought some dutch Artitec buildings as facades that will keep me busy for a good long while. Keep up the great work and I love hearing the narratives. The grand stories keep us thinking about how our respective worlds all fit together. - Mark |

It's a long time since I added a few more details to the "Gasthof zum Bogenschütze" diorama so I thought I'd post a photo update. |
