Hi everyone,

See below for an image of a 6090 decoder installed in a HAG locomotive, done many years ago before I bought the engine. I wanted to eliminate the light flickering via a function ground, but when I opened it up I was surprised to find no orange function grounding wire.

So the question- is this decoder not capable of function ground, is one somehow missing, or can I add one? In the latter two cases, how and where do I go about it?

Thanks and let me know!

Hi John,

The 6090 decoder did not have the function earth (orange wire) that you are referring to, it was introduced with the 60902 decoder.

That said, there used to be clever mods for some of the earlier decoders from people smarter than me.

Try this one https://www.pallund.dk/convert2.htm

Cheers....

Mike

Hi John,

UserPostedImage

Solder orange wire on the third diode from the top as shown, this is used to provide the plus voltage.

Thanks gent!

Ross- to confirm do you mean the orange on the third diode is the (-) grounding wire, not the plus? Or am I mixed up somehow?

Hi John,

We lay people refer to it as the earth/ground because we use it as a common earth for more than one light, however Ross is correct in calling it plus voltage, because in reality the flow of current is in the opposite direction to what we assume.

Either way, it is the one with the orange wire.

Cheers..

Mike

The solder pad shown in the very top left corner of this photograph is provided for this purpose, though it is not documented by Märklin. Sometimes this is known as the Waterstone Terminal in honour of the person who first suggested using it.

I have done quite a few flicker-removing upgrades to locos with 6090 decoders using this terminal. It takes a few seconds to do!

Thanks Nigel. I had read about this hack/fix, but my red wire is already soldered there like the image shows. Not an issue to send both wires to that terminal?

I magnified your pictures. It looked as though it bends over but may not be soldered to it. Maybe? Red should be to the slider so I would think that it shouldn't be connected to ground

Look here for the famous (in the days of 6090) Waterstone soldering pad

The red wire is soldered to the diode in the top left corner, however just above that is a seperate small solder pad that the orange wire goes to.

PS. If you are short of orange wire, I believe the cave of a thousand bottles stockpiled some prior to this outbreak

I have certified COVID-19 free, orange wire available for a limited time only. In a few months it won't matter!

Aha! by pad I thought Nigel was referring to the first diode. This all makes sense now, and what a wonderful trick! I'll get it rectified right after work tonight, and while I'm at it fix a few other 6090 locomotives on the roster....

Thanks for the help!
