After some time away I've finally managed to complete my layout. There still remains the task of calibration for automation, but I can drive my trains around manually. I have other hobbies waiting in the wings as the weather warms up and the isolation shackles are lifted.

Some of you may have seen the website I made to document my layout:

www.acreageline.com

You might remember the strange and hardly believable tale of Joachim Von Reinbek and his Sonoma County train collection. There's a page of history, as well as a complete list of his locomotives. Worth a read and good for a laugh in these shut-in times. And there's a Journal that follows the layout construction with pictures. The layout features a 14-turn helix. 14!

Have fun and stay healthy!

JB

P.S. A short video made for friends who wanted to know what I was up to:

https://vimeo.com/362877324

If you don't want to dive into the website, here are a couple pics of the helix:

That helix has as many rings as some of your Redwoods! Cool

Awesome!

Roger:

Ha! At five rotations I was just getting started. An early test: https://www.dropbox.com/...lu/Helix%20Test.mov?dl=0

Yes, I thought mine was tall, too. Until I saw this one: http://www.augustatrack.com/world-record

When I lamented that world record, my wife asked, "It's not really about size, is it?"

I take solace in knowing mine is a more permanent installation.

Sheesh, that would take some setting up. Wouldn't be impossible with C track though. Blink

Pretty impressive JB. Frankly it is a little boring after awhile as it does just go round an round. Better to be going some where.

I love the tunnels behind the books on the shelves - clever! Love

And the wonderful backstory! A labor of love!

I like the cabinet quality wood working. This one of your other hobbies?

The books on the shelf are all train books that donated their spines -- it's a false front. Behind them is the main track and a siding for Von Reinbek's Zeppelin.

My dad was a cabinet maker. I picked up some skills along the way. Just never look too closely. I've worked on my house, grounds, etc, and occasionally have made something nice, but more out of necessity.

As for going round and round, Roger, isn't that what almost all model train layouts ultimately do? Ha!

Acreage Line track workers are currently dealing with an alien invasion. All traffic stopped. No casualties yet, but it could be serious:

You need to get an anti-aircraft train to protect the track workers.

I have an attack underway as well but the bugs use gas weapons that stink like funky bananas.

Things are getting desperate. Unfortunately the workers only read German, so the choice of poison is questionable. And the can won't fit on the helix. I think they may bring in a crane.

On the can it says "Kills by Contact"! Does that mean the crane has to drop the can on the creature?
