Hi All,

I have tried searching through the various topics and have not been able to find a winner so, knowing that there are so many clever people here, I would try my luck and hope that someone could help.

I am running an old digital system (with K-Track) with a 6002 transformer, a 6020 control unit and a 6035 control 80. When I connect everything, all the lights come on on the various units and then, something strange happens: I put a loco on the track and off it goes—I can't stop it, control it or bring up the numbers on the display (it stays blank). I have tried pushing stop and go (because I read that that would reset one of the other controllers) at the same time and thought, what have I got to lose, that didn't work.

I am wondering also whether there is something wrong internally? I set up the track and found that I had short circuit (which I have since fixed by pulling everything apart). Could this have fried something?

Hoping someone could help please?

Thanks,
Sven

Hi Sven
I am not cleverBigGrin.
On the early digital units (back in 1985) there was no detection of model id (like with MFX) so you have to enter the digital number of your loco.
You may also experience some contact issues on your 6035 ("control 80") preventing you to switch off the current
Warning: never connect the transformer output (yellow and brown posts to the 6020 (control unit) track output (red and brown posts) it will kill the Control unit.

So if I understand correctly your set up is:
- 6002 transformer
- 6020 control unit
- 6035 control 80
Assuming they are correctly connected:
- is the red LED on the transformer 6002 on when you plug it?
- can you turn on and off the power (the red LED on your control unit)?
- can you enter digital numbers on your control 80 and do they show?
- when you install a digital loco and turn the power on what happens? (Normally nothing. If the loco runs full speed, it is not digital)

Notes:
- on this early digital system, there was no direction bit so a loco could run in the reverse direction
- the behavior of the system may be affected by aging large electrolyte capacitors (reduced value and reduced insulation)
If you are interested I can send you a 1985 Märklin catalog electronic copy by Private Message. (I cannot attach it here to avoid copyright issues)
Cheers
Jean

Sven, immediate uncontrolled top speed running of a locomotive on a digital layout is a sign that the locomotive does NOT have a digital decoder in it. It is analog. Remove the loco’s housing and post a photo so we may confirm.

OR - as seems to be a possibility from his description - the output of the control unit has been blown up, in this case by a possible short.

Assuming that you are trying locos that are digital and worked before, yes, as KiwiAlan wrote Blink

Thank you Jean, Fkowal, KiwiAlan and Per for your suggestions and help.

After testing the track with my analogue transformer and analogue trains (everything is now working as it should!) yesterday, I went and connected the digital system again this afternoon and, low and behold, some dark magic has happened and now everything is working perfectly! Confused

I agree with your post Fkowal but, the loco is digital and it always happens that the engine goes flat out when I first put it on the track. I then press stop and it does. Is this normal (I am new to the digital system)? I would think not? Confused

Thanks again for everyones' time and help.

Hi Sven
No this is not normal.
Normally you should power OFF the track, install your loco, power ON the track.
Without any orders sent to the loco it is supposed to be in forward direction with speed=0
Cheers

Analogue locos and digital locos with DIP switches configured for analogue operation will run full-speed as soon as track power is on.

A blown output on the 6020 might trigger locos to detect analogue mode and run full speed, too.
Regards
Tom
