Hi All…
After considering several options, I decided to build three (3) display cases with the help of my carpenter. One of them will be for the train room, one for the bedroom and one for the dining room! The display cases are built with reclaimed teak wood that is well over 80 years old. All the display cases are of the same size and their dimension is 3 feet (0.91 m) x 2 feet (0.61 m). The display cases have a long piano hinge at the top and the front door is fitted with 10N gas struts on the sides to lift and close the door. The display cases have five (5) shelves each, and they are also fitted with dust control strips all around. The photos should give you a rough idea of the construction. At first, I fitted the front door with Plexiglass. Although, I found the acrylic Plexiglas to be lightweight and easy to use, it was prone to too many scratches. I eventually changed my design and I fitted the front door with a 4mm glass sheet from Saint-Gobain. It worked out very well.
I intend to use these display cases as showpieces, as well as, to store my not so old antiques. I have had all my locomotives and rolling stock in original boxes up to now, and it is high time they all came out in the open for everyone to enjoy.
By the way, I have a few questions about the décor of the display cases, and the arrangement of my trains:
1. Do I simply put my locomotives and rolling stock on each shelf or do I need to fix some tracks and put them on it?
2. Do people generally ballast the tracks or can I simply leave the track alone? By the way, I plan to use some of my very old M-tracks.
3. Is there a chart explaining the typical configuration of Marklin trains? I would like to know the carriages that go with the locomotives that I have.

Quite a few of the 1980's catalogs have such a chart. I use tracks in my display case but I haven't ballasted them, whether you do is up to you. These two charts are from the 1980 catalog.

Very nice, Ranjit.
I wouldnt use any rails at all, as the locos would be weighing down on the traction-tires, causing them to "flatten out" on that spot. |

I built a case for my extra engines and rolling stock but not so beautiful as yours. If you do not use track any vibration will shift your display. You can also power your track to light up any rolling stock that has lights.

This may also stop the possible problem of getting flats on the rubber tyres, as the grooves don't need to be the full flange depth.

Great looking cabinets Ranjit, and an excellent job of making them. I wish I had some (several) like them :-) You can display your model however you like really. Personally, I like to see them on a piece of track, but does not have to be Marklin track, any cheaper 2-rail track is fine for display, and also has a lower profile unless you use K-track. Some people like to cram their cabinets with as much as they can, others prefer to leave space around some items so that they become more prominent - "less is more" as they say. I have a large poster of Marklin Train Compositions (consists), it was an enlargement of one published many years ago in one of the catalogues, probably in the 90's I think. I've taken a photo but the light is not too good so it's not very clear. Someone may have a better one to upload. I don't think they've published a more recent one in a while but could be wrong. Looks very nice and valuable for your rolling stock storage cases, especially the used teak wood gives them a very special touch. Did you think to put a glas protection on top of them too, keeping the dust out?

I am so happy that you liked the look of the display cases. I think I am like you. I too like my locomotives and rolling stock standing on a piece of track. As I have some spare M-track, I will be using those.
Thank you for the Marklin Train Composition poster. With the one that you have sent and the one David has sent earlier, I am good. I am in the "less is more" group!

Ranjit Any cover you can look through but keeps the dust away. Some of my locos I put onto a C-track piece in a lenght relating to the lenght of the loco. At both ends I put these little plastic caps for a nicely bank. https://www.maerklin.de/...rrpdb_pi1%5BnoPaging%5D=In my glas cabinet looks really good and kept dust free. Whereas the locos in the loco yard had to be dusted time by time.

Yes, the front frame has a "see through" glass. It can be lifted and closed. I do have a dust control strip all around, but I don't think it is 100% foolproof!
I would like to see you glass cabinet that keeps the locomotives and rolling stock dust free. You see, where I live, dust is everywhere!
I do like your end stops. I don't think there is one for M-track though!
